Evolution of laminating molds



The one on the very left is the latest i made and almost good enough to actually use it

In this case thats really not true ! i worked with laminates a lot before, but as soon as you start to make molds it somehow really goes scifi :/ so the last weeks i spend just doing trial and error...

I'm not an expert but I'll give it a try

What you have there is a positive mold (plug) that you laminate with fiberglass to make a negative mold (tool).

Materials used (starting from the plug or tool surface):
- Release agent. Wax and/or polyvinyl alcohol, you're using PVA.
- Gelcoat. Optional. You're not using this. It's a durable coating for the part or mold. It can be sanded/painted/repaired etc.
- Laminate CF/FG, light. Epoxy or polyester resin
- Laminate CF/FG, structural. Epoxy or polyester resin.
- Release film, peel ply. In the same or different layer.
- Bleeder fabric. Takes all the excess resin in itself.
- Breather fabric. Usually the same material as bleeder.
- Vacuum bag.

Laminate CF/FG materials are available as cloth, mat, tape, prepreg, biaxial, oh my

I actually do use Gelcoat, in this special instance its just my usual Epox with some thyxo mixed into it.

An theres one coat u forgot, the "coupling" coat between the very first layer of fibres and the rough structural layers afterwards, i used again the normal epox thickened with thyxo and wool

 

Nope, I didn't forgot anything. It's a list of materials used for a basic laminate to open up terminology as you requested. Short descriptions are there for everyone else reading and because english is not my first language, the description should tell if I got the term wrong and people can correct me.
