Could this in anyway be around ingame advertising? i.e. billboards with adverts for Bit-tech on them...

BF1942 was best for this, I could keep going up & up & up until I couldn't see anything below, then my team would spawn on me & they'd free fall for a few seconds before you could see the ground, then parachute down!

Didn't DICE say BF3 will have the same height for jets/choppers as BF2 so it's not as high as they've done but BF2 still had alot of head room :)

Ubisoft did that with the original RS:Vegas on 360. Many a film did I see advertised whilst shooting terrorists in Calypso Casino. :p

Maybe it could work like that it would make sense I suppose.

    Greetings!
Steam Hardware Survey starts with a popup where you choose if you want to participate or not. EA just collects anything they want after installation.

Just wondering where everyone is pre-ordering this from? I know if you go via origin you get 48hr early access to the beta but do you get access to the beta 48hr later from pre-ordering everywhere else? Or is the beta going to be public so it doesn't matter if you pre-order to get access eventually?

As I understand it the beta will be public so everyone will get access. It's just those who've preordered from origin or bought Medal of Honor will get 48hrs early access.

Krazeh, it could just be me, but I'm picking up a passive agressive undertone to your posts.

Impar was point out that there is actually a big difference between the two, that being that Steam allows you to opt out but Origin does not.

This could be an attempt provide better support for the endless combinations of hardware out there, but it feels a little less forthcoming than Steams approach and that's an irk for some people.

I'll grant you these people happen to be big Steam supporters.

I'm trying to dig further in to this to see if its something I find irksome or if it's really just as plane and innocent as it appears.

Not really. I just don't see why people get so worked up about irrelevant issues like this. By all means when it's information that can identify you that is being collected and being used then it's important to be aware of what exactly is taking place, what's being collected and what it's being used for but when it's anonymous data what really is the issue?

And tbh asking if you want to opt out is a courtesy at best, it really doesn't make that much of a difference. It's only been put in either because Valve doesn't consider the information that important or because they believe that the number of people who will opt out will be low enough to not make a difference to the data they collect.

But it's courtesy like that that help build a strong, trusting relationship with a fan/user base and is the kind of thing that have helped Steam build the reputation it has. I don't see how you can just dismiss that one company gives you the option to say no, but the other doesn't?

Fair enough its anonymous but I'd still like to know more about it. If my IP, what programs I have installed (OS version, AV/Anti-spyware/malware, firewall?) and how I use my PC are stored by EA and they are as inept at securing that data as Sony was, it becomes an issue.

I've looked in to the third party thing and it seems to be for things like ingame ads and for pushing other 'ad space' in Origin and giving developers some figures to see if pushing their product through Origin is worth what EA ask in return. No too far away from Steam on that front then.

It maybe an irrelevant issue to you but I'm interested and it's not as if I'm being like the crazies over on the Escapist forum or the IGN forums or even the gamespot forums and raging incomprehensible gibberish. I'm asking a quesiton and not making hot-headed statements.

If you have a problem with my posts why bother replying to them?

    Greetings!
With the Steam popup you can say you dont want to participate on the survey, with the EA thingy the only way not to participate is to not install the thingy.
If you dont see any difference, I cant do anything more for you.

Steam has optional hardware surveys but if anyone thinks they aren't collecting some other forms of data without asking us via pop up then I'd wager they are wrong.

Well, most jet maps had between 700m-800m ceiling before your craft started getting out of control... so that's plenty high.

DICE have said the ceiling in BF3 will be 1000m so that's awesome sauce right there!

I'm happy! If you see a helicopter lifting to 1000m with a squad leader in it, you know who it is! :D

If you see another helicopter flying straight down from 1000m and trying to level itself just before hitting the ground, often failing, that'll be me!
