You *do* know that rally stripes have a long tradition on many makes of cars, right? They they have a long tradition on corvettes from before mustangs and cobras. they are simply a method of quickly identifying the driver, particularly team drivers in the same makes of cars.

But we agree, in a non racing Ka, it's a crime against everyone. The driver should turn in his man card immediately.

 

In a non-racing context, I'd have to agree with Pooky. Racing stripes have their purposes in racing (even if you only take it to track rarely. A local Miata has a stripe and number for Spec Miata races), but in a street car context (never sees the track) a new tradition has come about where stripes, particularly evenly spaced dual stripes of even width, are reserved for Mustangs or Cobras.

On a related note, any sort of number on a car which never sees the track is a crime regardless of the model.

 

Not so. Seriously, look at the history of Camaros and Corvettes.

 

Yep.. aware of the racing heritage, and reasons for stripes. Hence they are often refered to as Le Mans stripes... however, on road cars......

Corvette? Nothing historical dictating the use of stripes on those. Camaros, yeah, but that was just a copycat fashion in the 60s Pony Car wars.

The operative word is "new". Corvettes and Camaros may have a history with stripes, but that's fading/faded. Take a look at current day roads and you'll find that striped Mustangs, particularly 5th generation, overwhelm the competition. Not only is the percentage of striped Mustangs high compared to unstriped, but the total number exceeds other models due to good sales. Maybe as the refreshed Camaros sell for longer they can get a foothold, but 70's-90's generation Camaros failed to make much of an impression in the stripes market, and Corvettes never seemed to have been big on them and still aren't.

 

5th? 1978 to 93? The Fox body Mustang? I'd say the latest generation.. '05 onwards are usually more striped than any other since the 64 to 68. You don't see that many Foxes striped.

 

Isn't that fifth? I'm admittedly not a big Mustang fan, partly because they're so popular. Whichever the latest generation is is what I meant.

Yeah.. popular there... not so much here, which is the appeal to me. Not sure I'd still be a Mustang enthusiast if I lived there, although I'd probably still own one.

 

What about the stripes on my mini cooper's bonnet? Admittedly, the replacement bonnet I have coming won't feature the stripes but they are iconic for the mini.

would still have it now but 2 and a bit years ago my wife came to me and said i am pregnant so naturally a ford ka wasn't a decent family car - it was my pocket rocket, play thing, a bit of fun if you like. Then i got the 1.8 veccy B

 

end of the day krikkit like i said before its each to their own - there are cars i dont like but friends of mine do and i say to them i dont like it personally but so and so might make it look better.

There is no right or wrong idea as to what a car should look like weather it be standard moddyfied race spec or rally spec its if the owner likes it thats all that matters

for the people that drove it, it shocked them the pick up wasnt 100% at top end but then again, its an 8V, bottom end torque was immense i could have it spinning in 3rd gearfrom a standing start, i agree once you drive something like a caterham downsizing, if you will, is like going back to the abacus but its always fun to try new things.

at least i know where the KA lives now, a friend of mine across the road (lisa) owns it and she loves it and loves what i havae done to it so if nothing else i have 1 fan of my work lol

You must have a tiny ... to have stripes on your car and an even smaller one to, after having said stripes, still having to wonder what others think about you. Model-specific heritage or not, if it's a new car, that doesn't really matter in my books anyway.

i was seriously thinking about making it a mad max style car (last of the V8 interceptor style) with the throttle body's comng out of the bonnet, was going to cost me between £15K- £25K, but like i said it had to go to make room for the family.


if i had the money again to do this again someday i think i would and actually pursue the mad max theme, engine, bonnet, exhausts, super charger e.t.c. would be interesting to see what it could do

 

are you sure on those fuel economy figures? 80 miles to a tank sounds dismal for any car.

my '89 escort makes 110hp out of the box but still manages 34mpg/350 miles per tank.

 

They were not really stripes over the whole car though. More of an edging down each side of the bonnet. I don't even think of them as a stripes really.

All that, and still only 110 bhp. By the time you have declared all that, and all the other mods, even the aesthetic ones to your insurance company, and then consider the cost of all the mods, you may has well have just bought a car that already has 110bhp.. or more You DID tell the insurance company didn't you?

If the body and windscreen sticker were a medium to dark grey, ditch the tribal sticker, keep the racing stripe and scoop, then I'd call it very cool

Nonsense. I don't do traditions. To me someone painting stripes on one particular vehicle 40+ years ago does NOT mean that some new cars should also be of the striped variety.

But yeah lets just disagree on the damn paintjobs and move on.
