For me the game that kick-started my PC gaming addiction was the Final Doom.

    Brilliantly awesome game...

I have a problem personally....there are so many great games out there I find it so difficult naming the best ever game...even if I was to go through the genres some of them, esp FPS, its very difficult to limit it to top game (even though I said best game earlier for me was HL2)

    Tactical FPS: Farcry,
    Fantasy FPS: Half-Life 2
    Online Shooter: TF2
3rd Person Action: Max Payne series
    FPS Action: Bioshock
    Horror FPS: Doom 3
RPG: Oblivion/Deus Ex (though I've not yet played Mass Effect/Fallout 3)
Stalker (sry it has to have a mention as a genre of its own...action/RPG/FPS/horror/survival)
    MMO: EvE Online
    4X Strategy: Civ 4
    RTS: C&C series (RA2 especially)
    City Builder: SimCity 4 Deluxe
    Tower defence: Defense Grid
Adventure: Prince of Persia Sands of Time
    Stealth: Thief 2/3
    Survival: L4D/2
    Horror: Amnesia
    Puzzle: Portal
    Classical: Doom
    Space Sim: Freespace 2/Freelancer
    Tycoon: Rollercoaster 3
    Arcade: Plants vs Zombies GOTY

Going on hours played it would have to be Ultima VII BG & SI - still fire up exult to have a go, or Elite (C64 version).

Planescape Torment, GT Legends, COD2, Half Life, Ultima III, Last Ninja1 & 2, Oblivion, ME 1 &2 - the list could go on as there were some great nights spent messing around in the C64 days with Racing Destruction Set and the games series from Epyx.

From days gone by, Baldur's Gate and Civ 2 both hold a very special place in my heart; not least due to the fact that they were some of the only games that would run on Windows NT 4, which is what we had on our home computer.

Time wise, it's a toss-up between Oblivion (500 hours ish) and Minesweeper of all things; again a lot due to Windows NT 4 not running much at all.

I have to say though, the section of Crysis from Assault through to going into the mine was just a fabulous piece of gameplay. I've played that stretch over and over again and it's a joy every single time.

Other mentions have to go to ME1&2 both of which I've again played through on many occassions.

I think the win has to go to Oblivion though, more down to the incredible nature of the modding scene available than the original game itself; just because it gave you such flexibility and so many options if things didn't gell as you wanted.

I think I'd have to hand it to the entire Half-Life series, narrowing it down to one game would be HL2 for me. They've done so much right with the game it's hard to find something I don't love. It's the little things in HL2 that make me happy, like playing catch with DOG, that is something that has always built the relationship you feel for the characters in that game. I can't stand a game that is mindless shooting (Although I do spend a lot of time in COD Multiplayer.)for 40 minutes then an unskippable credit scene.

Quick edit. Possibly the Unreal Tournament or tribes. Just because they have a lot of memories in networking class. I think Tribes was my first online FPS since it supported modem access on the PS2.

Deus Ex & Planescape Torment Both astounded me once I realised the depth that went into both games.

Far Cry and Half Life always kept me coming back for more

Arkham Asylum is the only game that recently wowed me like these, can't wait for city.

Dragon age came close, was highly addictive.

Edit: how could I forget Portal 2? :duh:

How the heck did i forget to put frontier on my list from discovering it aged twelve on a compilation cd my dad had stored in the loft it was one of the main games i played for the next two years. Not that i had much option as the pc i had was a 90mhz pentium 1 with 8mb of ram. Not much released in the early 00s that run on that.

I'm playing HL2 for the first time right now. It's interesting you mention the characters cos one of the things about it so far that I think could be improved is the lack of other characters. I'm a fair way into the the section where you're riding the canals on a small bike-boat thing and so far there has been minimal interaction with other characters - pretty lonely and easy to forget the purpose behind each segment.

I can see why people like it though. Pretty well put together.

    Easy.

    Wolfenstein 3D
    Quake
    Quake 2
    C&C Red Alert 2
    COD United Offensive
    Duke Nukem 3D
    Half Life 2

Not many more "recent" games have stood up to the enjoyment those gave me.

    HL1 by miles.

But only because of how it felt at the time - if you go back and play it now it's a great game sure, but it's not got that amazing extra factor it has at the time. It really truly shattered everything else that had ever been done at the time and just the feeling of playing it the first time, wow.

So much has come and gone in games since that HL2 just couldn't recapture that pure 'holy ****' feeling. Anyone that didn't play HL1 on release has truly missed out on a historic moment.

Every now and then a game comes along the raises the bar, Half Life invented the measurement.

    Worthy Mention goes to:

    Deus Ex
    KOTOR
    Civ 2
    Red Alert 2

(Amegia games: Super Cars, Moon Stone, Detroit)
