Bit late to the answer but 1: Authentic look of appealing decay (stained walnut), fits the overall look nicely, awesome fan grill BTW .

Thanx. I´ll be playing all types, but mostly shoot 'em ups and platformers I guess. Game series I love are Mega man(nes), Gradius(nes/snes) and Metal slug(neo-geo). There will also be some heavy button mashing in Track&Field II...

is it routed to a single usb cable?

If it's not too late I vote for option one. Painting over such pretty wood is a shame, if you can expose some of it and still get your contrast. It's OK. I'm a fan of the aged hardware look too.

Hi guys... The controller PCB finally arrived

Here it is... It´s a manageable size i think sooooo tiny.
Got wires in the delivery also, so no soldering needed


I soon realized that the PCB had 18(!!) button connectors, so I got an idea. Why not have four more buttons on the P1 controller, for savestates, exiting emulators etc... Started to mill on one of the sides.


Made a small panel


Painted it matte black of course... Aaaaand the tiny buttons. Red is for savestates.

Then I found out that the holes for the balltops in the roof was small I tried to make new ones, but the thick layers of spraypaint made it look awful afterwards...


... So I made a new one. This time a bit thicker.

Joysticks are awesome, especially with the added buttons for extra operations .

 

This is looking great! I love projects that use a lot of wood, and leaving it so you can actualy see wood instead of covering it with metal is even better. I'll be keeping an eye on this

 

This is looking fantastic, i'm quite the retro-fanatic. I'm interested in making my own arcade style joystick, where do you get your components for the joystick from, especially the pcb?

 

You just gave me the strength to finish the arcade stick I started this summer (prototype in my signature, project retrocade).

I just ordered my dames stick and buttons.

Thanks Darkwisdom! I got the buttons from akihabarashop but I usually get my stuff from a swedish destribitor called Arcadegames. I´m sure you can get the PCB from both. Good luck!

This evening I decided to put all the guts in and do a testrun of the system...
I will fix the cables a bit later, but don´t expect to find a beauty inside

Started with the mounting of the foot

The great great great PX7600 with a lot of wires


This was probably the hardest part... Trying to connect 15 very short cable(and knowing which is which) in a tight space
was not fun at all. Hands acctually went numb a couple of times


Then mount of the HDD

Works best with the concept "strange-antique-furniture-thingy-hiding-tech-stuff-thingys-inside"
And there will be enough black details for the contrast anyway.

When I did this I accidentally shoved the front on the floor, WITH THE GRILL FIRST!!
It smashed into pieces. I´m gonna have to quote myself from earlier:

"Fan grill finished. It´s only glued so it may pulverize when you huff 'n puff on it"



I will try to glue it together later


But at least everything else seemed in order. the test run ran perfect



In the next couple of days I´ll install Maximus, emulators and such... Then it´s off to the photo studio I guess
