Bit late to the answer but 1: Authentic look of appealing decay (stained walnut), fits the overall look nicely, awesome fan grill BTW :thumb:.

    I know the feeling...

Thanx. I´ll be playing all types, but mostly shoot 'em ups and platformers I guess. Game series I love are Mega man(nes), Gradius(nes/snes) and Metal slug(neo-geo). There will also be some heavy button mashing in Track&Field II...

Thank you Waynio! I might go with the stained one after all...

    Tnx mate

Btw, here´s a tribute joystick I made some years ago.
It just seemed relevant to put it here, and I can spam my own thread as much as I want :D

It´s called In the year 20XX

    The joystick is fantastic!
...is that a ball mouse on the left!?! :eeek: u dont see those everyday...

Ooh, That one is nice too.:D
If it's not too late I vote for option one. Painting over such pretty wood is a shame, if you can expose some of it and still get your contrast. It's OK. I'm a fan of the aged hardware look too.

Thanx kelmannen... It IS a ball mouse :D It´s all routed to a single output cable yes... Got a USB-hub inside.

Thank you Cheap. Of course you can vote... I might go for the aged look on the front indeed

Hi guys... The controller PCB finally arrived :cooldude:

Here it is... It´s a manageable size i think :D sooooo tiny.
Got wires in the delivery also, so no soldering needed
    [IMG]

I soon realized that the PCB had 18(!!) button connectors, so I got an idea. Why not have four more buttons on the P1 controller, for savestates, exiting emulators etc... Started to mill on one of the sides.

    Made a small panel
    [IMG]

Painted it matte black of course... Aaaaand the tiny buttons. Red is for savestates.

    PCB mounted in the joystick
    [IMG]

    Some wiring
    [IMG]

The new panel... looks quite good I think
    [IMG]

Cutting the USB cable for the DIN adapter
    [IMG]

    A lot of wires
    [IMG]

    Finished joysticks!!!

Then I found out that the holes for the balltops in the roof was small :wallbash: I tried to make new ones, but the thick layers of spraypaint made it look awful afterwards...

... So I made a new one. This time a bit thicker.

    Off to painting again :sigh:

    Almost done now :lol::lol::lol:

In the year 20XX - Very cool :).

Joysticks are awesome, especially with the added buttons for extra operations :).

This is looking great! I love projects that use a lot of wood, and leaving it so you can actualy see wood instead of covering it with metal is even better. I'll be keeping an eye on this :)

This is looking fantastic, i'm quite the retro-fanatic. I'm interested in making my own arcade style joystick, where do you get your components for the joystick from, especially the pcb?

Thank you! Glad you liked the extras.

    Thank you... Wood 4 life!!

Thanks Darkwisdom! I got the buttons from akihabarashop but I usually get my stuff from a swedish destribitor called Arcadegames. I´m sure you can get the PCB from both. Good luck!

Thank you. Glad to inspire! Sure, I´lll post some gaming footage later

MOTM nominee! Totally unexpected... Happy happy me

This evening I decided to put all the guts in and do a testrun of the system...
I will fix the cables a bit later, but don´t expect to find a beauty inside :D

Started with the mounting of the foot
    [IMG]

    Here´s the empty shell
    [IMG]

External DIN connectors on two sides
    [IMG]

Made a stereo cable for the sound output
    [IMG]

    VGA connector mounted
    [IMG]

    Power supply...

    ... and its connector
    [IMG]

Intake fan on the back (I used the one from the power supply)

    Back view
    [IMG]

    Back view with dust grill
    [IMG]

The great great great PX7600 with a lot of wires
    [IMG]

This was probably the hardest part... Trying to connect 15 very short cable(and knowing which is which) in a tight space
was not fun at all. Hands acctually went numb a couple of times
    [IMG]

    Then mount of the HDD
    [IMG]

Back of the front plate. I chosed the stained one.
Works best with the concept "strange-antique-furniture-thingy-hiding-tech-stuff-thingys-inside" ;)
And there will be enough black details for the contrast anyway.

Front plate with fan and pushbutton
    [IMG]

Just a view from outside without the plate
    [IMG]

Had to carve away some material for the DIN connectors to fit
    [IMG]

When I did this I accidentally shoved the front on the floor, WITH THE GRILL FIRST!! :waah:
It smashed into pieces. I´m gonna have to quote myself from earlier:

"Fan grill finished. It´s only glued so it may pulverize when you huff 'n puff on it"

    :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

I will try to glue it together later :sigh:

But at least everything else seemed in order. the test run ran perfect :D
    [IMG]

In the next couple of days I´ll install Maximus, emulators and such... Then it´s off to the photo studio I guess

    :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Fan grill re-glued... Like it never happened :naughty: Here´s the front attatched and system running.

And here´s a teaser of the customized skin I´ve made for Maximus Arcade, the self booting arcade interface.
I like how the intro logo turned out. Quite retrotasitc I think :lol::lol:
