I'm not good at strategy, other than 'make big guns/overwhelming numbers' lol But I shall indeed go back to them, I played them when I was a lot younger, maybe I'll get them more now.

Yeah, TFD was excellent. Trying to eliminate that last pixel high enemy who had wandered round a mountain was tough. Great online play for its time. Only Arma surpases the experience.

ah, well problem with Homeworld is that biggest ships still need escorts.

you can't just build 3 battlecruisers and expect to win the game, you'll still need counter for fighters (your fighters), corvettes (your corvettes), frigates (your destroyers).

take some time to get into it. once you get your ideal fleet, it's a wonderful experience.

I loved the star cannon in Cataclysm. It basically just reset the fight every time you fired it. :D

    You're not the only one.

Closest thing to a decent space combat sim there is now is X3, and that's not really combat focussed. :(

I bought a soundcard for X-Wing, for example. Suddenly, there was the Star Wars theme blasting at me as I was dogfighting with a TIE Fighter... in glorious MIDI! :D

Wish Lucasarts would stop being idiots and make a sequel to X-Wing Alliance, or an Imperial version or something - would be amusing to try doing the Death Star Tunnel Run from the perspective of the TIE Interceptors - see if you can kill the Falcon before they blow the core... :naughty:

Other honourable mentions for space combat sims would be Tachyon: The Fringe (which has the added bonus of having Bruce Campbell, of Evil Dead 'fame', do the voice work) Starlancer (even though I struggled to find it interesting) and Freelancer, which dropped decent joystick support in favour of a mouse-flight model. Oh, and Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos... that was excellent too, although oddly hard to find.

But Freespace 2 was/is the master. Rarely has a game made my jaw drop from the scale of an enemy ship. The Shivan Juggernaut Sathanas jumping in-system right on top of me was just such a moment.

    ...

Slightly more on-topic, it will have to be genre-dependent I'm afraid... ;) but... pick one of the following...

Deus Ex (remains the only game I bought day of release that I have never regretted the purchase of)
Final Fantasy VIII (never really got into VII, sunk more hours than was sensible into it)
TIE Fighter: Collectors CD (did X-Wing, but better ships and missions)
    Civilization II (turn-based awesomeness)

I won't start on various time-sink JRPGs like Disgaea, or I'll be here forever... :naughty:

    :D

Platform agnostic ahoy! Where applicable, a series counts as one; that makes things harder!

    1) Disgaea (PS2/PSP for Disgaea 1&2, PS3 for Disgaea 3&4) - Strategic RPG (turn based isometric-style) - technically impossible to complete. The 'story' is, perhaps at most 1% of the game itself due to the Item World, a randomly generated dungeon system inside each item. Each and every item. Either 30, 60 or 100 floors, depending on 'normal', rare or legendary class item. I have sunk so much time into Disgaea it isn't even funny. Personally I find the story of Disgaea 1 far more appealing than D2/3 (not yet played 4) but they are all very good games. The character byplay of Laharl, Etna and Flonne is just funny.

    2) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES (PS2) - also honourable mention of Persona 3, Persona 4, Persona (PSP) Persona 3 Portable (PSP) and Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP). 3 FES was released because fans did some rather... extreme stuff to the developers when they realised how poor the ending of 3 'normal' was. Semi-traditional JRPG - an odd fusion of social-simulator and RPG, which for some reason just works. Hard as nails and as unforgiving as trying to tap them in with a sledgehammer and hitting your thumb. The dungeons are fun (and the bosses) and the mechanic of how 'tired' or 'sick' your party members are means that you have to balance leveling with keeping them in optimum condition. The ability to fuse Personas for new ones (mixing the abilities the parent Persona had) brings an element I've not seen in any other games I can remember right now. P1 has to be mentioned as having a first-person dungeon style, which I honestly find quite disconcerting and perhaps a little nauseating if I'm dungeon crawling too long.

    3) Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) (also FFT: The War of the Lions, PSP) - more SRPG goodness, this time in a FF mould. The story has some very good twists and turns, while the game has a far more definite end than Disgaea, for those who like their games to end. ;)

    4) Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call (Nocturne in the US) (PS2) - more traditional JRPG. Same sort of universe mechanic as SMT: Persona, without the social-simulator component. Has a cameo by Dante (of Devil May Cry). While 'simpler' than Digital Devil Saga, Digital Devil Saga 2 and Devil Summoner (all PS2)... I prefer it.

    5) Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PS2) - (honourable mention: Dragon Quest IV, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI, Dragon Quest IX (all Nintendo DS). DQ8 possesses a DragonBall Z art style which I don't really like, but nevertheless find quite charming in the DQ games. It's got the usual JRPG type battle mechanics, but they take more from their roots in terms of information delivery - the 'tension system' in it is quite interesting in that it allows you to withhold attacking in favour of doing more damage with a later attack (to a limit) but you lose 'tension' if you get hit by an enemy. DQ8, unfortunately, remains one of the games I start when I have some free time, get 30-40 hours in, and free time reduces enough that I have to stop playing. When I go back, I've totally forgotten what I need to do, so decide to start again... so I've seen the start half a dozen times...

    6) Final Fantasy VIII (PC, also PSX) - (extremely honourable mention; FF II, IV, V, VI (SNES/PSX/PSP)). While I will have people disagree with me on this, I preferred FF8 to FF7. I found FF7 rather tedious, most of the characters (like, say, Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Red XIII, Cid, Yuffie...) incredibly irritating (much like I found all the characters in FFX, FFXII and FFXIII) to the point where I just didn't want to play it. The only saving graces of FFVII were Sephiroth and the materia system. FFVIII, on the other hand, had a forced romance story-arc while did grate, but nevertheless drew me in. I liked the characters; I loved the music - :hip: Nobuo Uematsu :hip:; I liked the battle system; the only slight downer was the magic (Draw) system, but that forced you to prioritise and plan ahead, so it was no bad thing. FF game with best storyline goes to FFVI, hands down. Most bemusing leveling system goes to FFII (where stats leveled as you used them). V gets most-evil-final-boss award.

    7) Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Ravis (PS2/PSP) - a sort of semi-social-sim, semi-school-life-sim, mix-it-up-and-pray-it-works-sim and JRPG, I can't really explain why I love this game so much, I just do. Level up by making items through alchemy and logging them in a 'grow book'... sounds easy, but at times can be so nightmarishly hard it is astounding. Gets added points for homicidal-but-cute-alien and being able to see random encounters coming, and avoid or strike first (in a similar way to Persona 3/3 FES/4)...

    8) Cross Edge (PS3) - a strange hybrid of a game. Battles are carried out on a grid system which introduces a tactical aspect that few games before exhibited; it's a bit of a 'crossover game', as it presents characters new, as well as those taken from other games (Darkstalkers, Disgaea, Atelier Marie, Ar Tonelico, and a few other games) it got absolutely eviscerated in reviews, but if you can forgive the overly complex menus and absolutely unforgiving battles, it's a highly enjoyable game. The free DLC is an absolute must, as it gives you some items, skill points and cash at the start which make the early game a lot, lot less punishing. Having said that, I played about the first 15 hours without any of the DLC (free or otherwise, and I only have the free stuff now) and did OK; but it's a definite 'save often, in different slots in case something terrible happens' game - even random encounters can cost you enough healing items to make the next boss (near) impossible.

    9) Recettear: An Item Shops Tale (PC) - this one is even available on Steam, along with the later released in English, but earlier game "Chantelise". Of the two, I think Recettear is better, a bit of shop running, a bit of dungeon crawling, and a cute-if-done-a-million-times story. Both are worth picking up just for amusements' sake.

    10) Septerra Core (PC) - near impossible to find, now, this was a PC-exclusive sort-of-Final-Fantasy-VII game that never got remotely the attention it deserved because too many people were a little too busy over FF7. I remember loving it, I just can't remember much about it. I fear some of my love might be rose-tinted-spectacles. I believe it can be had from Good Old Games.

    11) The Last Remnant (PC) - a recent 360/PC RPG from SquEnix which badly needed less faffing in the battles, and more focus on making a story which didn't get boring in about 30 minutes. It's a bit of a shame, because there is actually a lot of promise in this game, it's just that I'm rarely in the mood for it.

    12) Chrono Trigger (SNES/PSX/DS) - would rank it higher, but wanted to put a few PC games in the top 10. ;) Love this game; the battle mechanics are oddball, but work. Sort of ATB-but-not.

    13) Xenosaga II (PS2) - KOS-MOS. Could have screamed when they refused to release Ep III in the UK. I fell for this game the minute I got to wonder around in a big-stompy-robot-mecha-thing in the intro. When you got out of the mech, it only got better. Prefer the music in Xenosaga I, but still love the music in II.

    14) Suikoiden V (PS2) - slow moving, but non-predictable plot with a solid game behind it. Not played a great deal of it, but what I have played, I've enjoyed quite a bit. Haven't played any of the others.

    15) ...and I think I'll stop there.

The three games that have had the biggest impact on me:

    1) Sonic the Hedgehog on the Mega Drive - The speed and the colours... oh my goodness, I could still happily play it for hours today.

    2) Final Fantasy 7 - First game to make me think games can be epic. I'd never played an rpg before this.

    3) Morrowind - The first game that beat FF7 for epicness. The freedom and character development possibilities were mind blowing to me at the time.

Xenogears, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VII and III/VI remain among my all time favorites. Also there's Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2, Super Mario World, Lunar Silver Star Story Complete, Metal Gear Solid and many more I can't remember right now.

BIG RIGS- as said before... Here's a video to explain it all:

    Video starts at 0:49- or:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dD3OfVVVI88&feature=related

Fun things to point out about this game:
    1) You go through EVERYTHING
    2) You can't lose- the AI truck only goes about 10mph and even if it beats you, it waits at the finish line.
    3) The truck grips to mountains, meaning you can go anywhere.
    4) When reversing, there is an infinite speed limit, you can't stop.
    5) When you win- as always- it says "You're winner"

I shall be brief, don't want to derail too much haha.

    1) Hmm sounds interesting I will have to look into these. Does sound pretty time consuming, and that's a good thing really. Games never seem to last long enough these days.

    2) I know about these games and I have been meaning to buy one to see what it's like. Thanks for reminding me!

    3) Got it.

    4) Same as 2.

    5) Don't own anything Nintendo (Got nothing against them, I just sold my NiN stuff coz I needed the money). May have a look to see about emulating.

    6) I own nearly all Final Fantasy games. Sunk more hours into the franchise than is healthy. Only missing 11, 13 and 14, and I am happy to be missing those 3.

Have to say I loved both 7 and 8. Loved them all up to (and including) 10. Everything since should be burned with fire, the ashes put into Fluoroantimonic acid and the remaining sludge should then be shot into the sun.

    7) Not so sure I'd like this one.

    8) Don't own a PS3 :waah:

    9) I'll look into this one as well.

    10) I've got this somewhere! Totally forgot about it. I must find it! Also got Silver knocking about too. That's another game that never got the attention it deserved.

    11) HATE IT!

    12) Got it and I LOVE IT! You ever played Chrono Cross on the PSX? Don't think it was ever released in Europe, but you can emulate the USA version perfectly on pc. It's a damn good game and has a very interesting magic and skill system.

    13) I've got the anime somewhere. Never did get the game. Another option, thank you!

    14) Name rings a bell.. Yup I've heard of this. Should be worth a look as well. :D

    15) Dude I think I love you
I really didn't expect you to put that much thought into it. Awesome stuff and lots for me to acquire and play. Rep incoming.

Games I think I've spent the most time on:

Mech Warrior (the original was more fun for me than any of the later ones)

Civ 2 (with the help of a hex editor and 4DOS scripts I made my own gold hack for that one)

The Wing Commander 1 & 2 (never had a sim had so much atmosphere)

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (the 225-page manual alone was awe-inspiring)

Star Trek: Birth of the Federation (recently renewed my interest with some fun mods: (Link))

Guild Wars (way too much time wasted in this)

Derail? What is this mystical detail that you speak of? :D We're in a thread discussing 'best game ever' and discussing JRPGs, many of which for a lot of people could contend for 'best game ever'. :thumb:

I've got a few I forgot... (bad Paradigm!) I'll ignore PS3 and Nintendo based ones, since you haven't got those options.

    16) If you do have a 360, Tales of Vesperia is excellent. Easily the best of the JRPGs on the 360, although I sometimes found the way it links random battles together frustrating as rather than multiple 'easy' fights, it would be one rather difficult one.

Back to the PS2, however (the golden home of JRPGs)...

    17) Okami - how could I forget this one. Cel-shaded and focussed on Japanese/Shinto mythology/folklore it has an art style that, if you like old Japanese artwork you'll fall for instantly, or if you don't... completely hate. I'm not sold on the 'paint brush' system that the game uses. I am, however, utterly drawn in my the soundtrack... I want the OST very, very much.

    18) Shadow Hearts/Shadow Hearts: Covenant - of the two, I prefer the second, although you may be left scratching your head wondering why the main character is such a wossname if you haven't played the first. Uses a game mechanic called the 'Judgement Ring' which I struggled with at first but then got to grips with really well and was hitting perfects all the time. It's customisable, too. It has Rasputin in as well, although I won't go into details or it'll be some big, big spoilers.

    19) Star Ocean (1&2 on the PSP, 3 on the PS2, 4 on the 360/PS3) - the one I've put the most time into is 3 (Till the End of Time) which I really, really enjoyed. Very little about it stands out over and above other similar JRPGs, but it's just an amazing game that does what it does very, very well. Not so enamoured of 4, and while I have 1&2, I've barely touched them so wouldn't wish to offer an opinion that does not do them justice.

    20) Valkyrie Profile - (Lenneth: PSX/PSP, Silmeria: PS2) - an odd game. Dungeon crawling is more like a side-scrolling platformer, there is no money to speak of, and the battle system felt unfair to the point of misery for me at times... but if Norse mythology is of interest, it's a fun take on the whole deal.

    ...

    1) The good thing about the Disgaea games is that you can play them for the story, or you can play them to max out everything (which is an epic, epic grind-fest toward the end, particularly in the later games). You can 'complete' the story at ~lvl 100, but each character can go up to lvl 9999... before reincarnation/Transmigration (which starts you back at lvl 1, with a customisable stats boost for each time you do it). Hidden bosses and other such nasties will really push you if you want everything. Seriously, if you do get into one of these games... be prepared to think all other developers are lazy when it comes to levelling in RPGs. :D The music Tenpei Sato comes up with is varied, appropriate, and highly, highly addictive too.

    2) The Shin Megami Tensei games are all very good, but the 'Persona' sub-series can be something of an acquired taste due to the social-sim aspect.

    10) Silver is a game I've heard so much about, and yet never played... if it appeared on Good Old Games, I'd buy it in an instant.

    12) No, I never got the chance to play Chrono Cross. Would very much like to, though.

    13) There's an anime? :eeek:

No worries on the detail; I didn't think I'd written much, hit preview and :jawdrop:... and I think I've done it again...

Holy shizzle! Right then, lets get typing...

    16) Nope, no xbox 360 here either. And on this occasion it is gutting. Tales games are usually pretty decent and I've a friend who's already gushed over how fantastic Vesperia is. HUFF! I won't get to play it for YEARS.. Basically when a PC can emulate a 360 without a f**kton of lag, and when I can afford one that is good enough to do so, I will get to play it.

    17) Got to say I've never heard of it.

    18) Got the first game. Thought I would complete it before buying the others. Made it as far as the floating city place and fought some nasty sub-boss, I saved it after I killed the thing, but never went back to it. Game was fun, but it never lit my fuse if you know what I mean. It only just managed to keep my attention for as long as it did. I feel almost guilty for not going back to it. I really must.

    19) I've got the first one. I would like to get the ones on ps2, but they go for silly money these days.

    20) Not heard of this one either.

I'm amazed you left out Grandia II actually. I loved that game!

Vagrant Story (PSX) - Is another I'd mention as it has a rather nice crafting system for weapons and armour. On top of that weapons types only do significant damage to enemys of a certain affinity. You train up your affinitys by attacking those types of enemys (or the occasional dummy) with a weapon that has the opposite affinity. So it was a good idea to have several types ready for use (air/water/earth/fire/light/dark).

There's a wide selection of weapons, armour, accessorys, gems and whatnot. A decent selection of spells too. As you fight you can chain abilitys together + there are Break Art moves to unlock. These depend on what weapon type you are using, and there are 4 arts for each weapon type (Dagger/Sword/Great Sword/ Axe & Mace/Great Axe/Staff/Heavy Mace/Polearm/Crossbow/Bare Hands). If your timing is right you can get massive combinations by chaining abilitys together. Story isn't bad either. A game you can really sink ya teeth into. There is much else besides that I can't remember.

And yea, there is a Xenosaga anime :D
