Storage HDD Prices

bought a 2TB Spinpoint F4 last friday for £65, now they're £80, LOL.

 

Expect this to change soon though.. the next batch of Ext will be subject to the new prices. Also companys such as WD who will be looking to recoup losses will turn to other areas of thier business for profit.

Need more storage get External.

Update i heard form Toshiba account manager is that 4-5 weeks for the flood waters to go down. Its still raining and its about to go into high tide season. This isnt going to blow over quickly it seems. Which for some one who main business of distributing HDD is not good..

 

Only one today . Price of WD20EARX jumped to 200€.

 

Surely these hard drive companies must have a resilience plan in order to move/increase production elsewhere?

 

God dammit, I was just looking at buying another one of those a couple of days ago when they were about £75, I go back to Scan today to order one and it's gone up nearly £10

I think I might as well just bite the bullet now before they go up even more, I'm rapidly running out of hard drive space

 

Ebuyer now showing £100 for a 1TB up from £75 yesterday, most retail sites now also limiting to 1 per customer, I reckon if you want a new PC for Christmas then you need to order with in two weeks., Plus this effects every home entertainment device with a HD, so that’s PVR, laptops etc...........

 

Most device manufacturers have hard drives at stock for next 2-4 weeks of production, then they run out of them as well.

December is going to be a lot of fun for hard drive buyers. Some <=250GB hard drives already rival the prices of 60-64GB SSDs, and i fear that we are only at the start of the hard drive price increase. I wouldn't be surprised at 400€/2TB hard drive price. It is already at 200€ in my country, with hard drives in stock. Once the stock is sold, and the shop will get few hard drives per week, then the prices will skyrocket.

 

Ordered some WD20EARX from ccl while they showed in stock on the website on the 18th. 2 days later the price had gone up to over 100 pounds (while still showing in stock on the website).

Got an email yesterday saying the hard drives were discontinued. Sure enough that harddrive no longer appears at all on the website.

 

It depends. Yes, they would expect to bring in and sell 4000 hard drives - at price before the increase. But with price increase, the number of buyers goes deep down. Do you really think that the hard drives which were in 30-40€ region (sub-500GB drives) which are now sold at 75-110e range will find that many buyers as before ? I don't think so. Of course there will be a higher demand for SSDs, but i don't think they won't be able to handle the situation, as the numbers of people willing to buy the SSD will not increase that much, but the number of people willing to buy a hard drive will go down a lot, and some of them will convert to SSD for the same price.

For example, the cheapest hard drive on stock right now in my country is a 250GB Seagate for 75 euros. You can buy a Kingston SSDNow V100 64GB for that price.

The cheapest WDC is a 250GB model for 95 euros. Now let's see, what >40GB SSDs can we get for 95 euros:
- ADATA S510 60GB
- ADATA S596 & S599 64GB
- Crucial m4 64GB
- Corsair Force 60GB
- OCZ Solid 3 & Agility 3 60GB
- Patriot Pyro 60GB
- Samsung SSD470 64GB

 

Yep fair enough when it comes to the average Joe who was thinking of getting a new HD.
But i work for a Small system builder, at this time of year we would normally be doing 300 to 400 systems a month, I am sure the likes of PC specialist would be doing a 1000+ a month, so just for the system builders we need 5 to 10,0000 harddrives a month, otherwise the system builders cant build systems, then its very bad news.

 

Yea the HDD market is much bigger than the 'enthusiast builder' People like rob the bank will still be building systems. the hdd price may of added another 60% cost on but when its hidden into the price of a system its a extra 5-10% which shouldnt put off prospective customers. The issue will be securing the drives.. Demand will still be high

Of course i was talking about average Joe . But even in your case, people buying the systems with 250-320GB hard drives are usually not the ones who can throw away lot of money. And then when you build a 500€ computer, but you have to add that 10% (50€) on top of it which is a difference between the old and new hard drive (250GB) price, then some will not like the new price. At 1000€ some 50€ is not an issue. At 400-500€ range it is a huge issue.

I'm really not sure what to do, I had to wait until this Friday to buy the parts for my build, so far I only have a 120Gb SSD that's not really going to cover me unless I only install a couple of games (ie no Steam) until prices become more affordable and just keep using my laptop for iTunes etc.

 

If you can't wait until after Christmas, then buy the cheapest one you can find today, note this may even be an external drive, and just remove the HD from inside.
At the moment your thinking time will cost around £10 / day on a 1TB drive.

 

Never though of removing an external from its casing. I have a 500Gb WD elements. Its a few years old but I could use that for a while

 

I've been thinking... what's the likelihood of SSD prices being driven up by increasing demand? I mean, with the increased numbers of people making the jump to SSDs because of the HDD price leap, somebody's going to cotton on to the fact that there's more money to be made.

 

They will probably rise a little bit, but not much. The number of people "making the jump" won't be that big.

 

If SSD becomes more attractive due to the current high prices of magnetic storage (substitute product) then prices in the short term will increase. With the increase in demand of SSD, supply of SSD should also increase which in the long run reduces the cost of manufacture which then eventually brings down the price of SSD. That's the theory anyway.

EDIT: The 2TB drive I bought last weekend for £79 is now priced at £168 on scan!
