Yeah, as someone said, don't get hung up on bang-for-buck. Don't compromise; get the quickest card you can afford. It'll last you longer. I imagine that was the same reasoning that made you buy the 8800gtx over the 320mb 8800gts which was the best bang-for-buck at the time?
I would admit that only a handful of games are going to be VRAM limited at 1.3 gigs, but when you get one it does annoy you. Shogun 2 in particular made me wish I had bought a 2.6 Gig card. This game will actually dynamically disable effects such as AA if it does not detect enough video memory. I thought my 570 would be the shizzle, but Shogun taught me otherwise. No matter how fast your card you will always wish you had a faster one!
spyware? some people just dont like a change from the norm yes its a pain in the ass to start with but you get used to it and then it feels like second nature.
The terms of agreement are a step too far for me and I want to keep all of my games in one browser, as I learnt from playing Crysis on DVD not having the Steam Alt+Tab was a real pain.
Not really entirely true. If you'd got say a 8600 and then a 260 instead of a 8800 and not upgrading that till a 580 the mid range option would be the same price and yet offer much better performance on average.
The last time we discussed (and fought over) this question, we ultimately agreed that the 570 really comes into its own at resolutions above 1920x1080. With the resolution capped at 1080, the 560Ti is very close indeed and the cheapest 570 offers only a little increase in performance for a very large jump in price over the cheapest 560Ti. If I was buying just now with a budget big enough for a 570, I'd probably just get a 2GB 560Ti because of the resolution of my screens.

Can't go wrong with the Twin Frozr. And going from an 8800GTX to a GTX560Ti will make you drool for at least a week.
Seriously, get the 570. LennyRhys is right that *right now* a 560Ti will max everything at 1080p. In a year's time this is unlikely to be the case. In 2 years time the 570 will still be great, but the 560Ti is very unlikely to be so. It is a cut-down version of the 570. Again, I have a 560Ti. I think it is a fabulous card, especially if you can get it for under £180. If I had had the money, I would have got a 570.
You can always buy the 560Ti now and at a later date buy another to put into SLI, the 560 would have dropped a lot in price (new or second hand) and it would still give you a beefy rig. I did that with my 7800GTX and it worked out well financially.
tbh the 8800GTX has served me for what, 5 years? I can't see why I'd need to upgrade again anytime soon if I get a 560 Ti But I am still unsure..
I went from a 320mb 8800gts to a 560Ti shortly before Shogun 2 released and I was a little disappointed however that may be because my CPU is a C2D @ 2.33ghz so my opinion may be invalid
Disapointed? Thats a mahoooosive change, I went from a gtx 275 to a 560ti and noticed a big difference.
