Just found this via hackaday. Adding in a BTX580 desktop GPU to a laptop. Pretty good hack, practicalities aside.
Thats the bummer bit. However, its an awesome concept for laptop users....most gamers tend not to hardcore game whilst on the move in any case....it'll be stuff thats easier to play and more 'slow'. Once you get to where your going out comes the GPU case!
With a decent casing and an external power supply (GPU would require it's own power adaptor rather than via the laptop itself) and a good way to bring the output to the laptop screen it's a very viable concept but what about the market? You could say it's great for a hardcore LANpartier but one who is hardcore would probably rather have a more powerful rig which would probably be cheaper than a powerful laptop plus GPU. For everyone else it's probably not necessary though there's the option of switching an expensive GPU between your rig at home then taking out to bring it with you on holiday with your expensive laptop?
or alternatively you could get an Alienware 18x (*runs*) with GTX580M in SLI or the 6990M in Xfire? It also means it's more portable and doesn't require an external power supply
You mean the ViDock? I posted a thread a while ago about it, personally i think its a great idea IF you can get 90+% performance from the GPU most reports say its a lot lower than that tbh.
Why spend £350+ on a GTX 580 that's running at around 60%? Why not just get a 560Ti that'll run more towards 100% of its rated performance, but give you the same end result, for half the price?
Because 60% of a 580 is still some beastly performance for a laptop? Either way; It's more a case of Relentless Gluttony than sheer performance lust. I still kinda want something like that. A Lan rig that'll hook into an SLI setup when It's a home would be awesome.
I don't really get your point. You can have a slimline laptop with a powerfull processor and a great battery life for working on all day at school. When you get home you just plug in the ExpressCard and fire up a game of BF3 at "high" settings on the 24" monitor that you coupled to your GTX 560 Ti dock. I'd love this setup tbh.
what he needed was this: http://www.thunderbolt-peripherals.com/t-bolt-pcie-expansion able to connect any PCIe card to laptop through thunderbolt. which supports PCIe interface.
