Gaming Industries need to step up and make reall PC games for PC's and not concentrating on consoles like. It's not intel fault that gaming industries afraid to make really tight games that would require a lot of horsepower and stress the crap out of six core processors. Because we all know chepo consoles players going to cry.

Yeah...disappointing. Not that the performance is bad, but damn! $550 for definitely not double the processor you get with the i5-2500K? Looks like it will be an e-peen extender, like Gulftown was for a lot of people. You sure as hell don't need to drop this kind of cash for an extra 5fps in games.

So, the lesson is, unless your workstation dies tomorrow, you might as well wait for IB-E.

Still a little teary about the FX-8150 being at the bottom of damn near all benchmarks, though :'(

We're never going to see a 20-30 per cent performance leap from one generation to the next again? Really?

    :D

Yep, that's our understanding at the moment. Ivy Bridge is pin-compatible with Sandy Bridge (on LGA1155) so we'd really expect Ivy Bridge E to be pin-compatible with Sandy Bridge E.

However, don't rule out a chipset update (one that's closer to the X79 rumours, with USB 3, SAS, SATA 6Gbps throughout etc, probably with PCI-E 3 support too) that might break compatibility. Hopefully it won't (if it even happens) but the reasonable assumption of a much better chipset for Ivy Bridge E means that switching to LGA2011 right now if you're only looking to get ready for Ivy Bridge E might not pay off.

So if your expecting a 20/30% increase with top end ivy bridge I7's over the current sandy bridge offerings then they will leave sandy bridge e well behind in terms of performance, surely?

The E could stand for many things. Some people may Envy others who own one. Many will agree that they are too Expensive and Enthusiasts will be Enthralled by them, lol.

    The E is for E-Peen.

As far as my narrow fortune telling can see its +1 Intel. All this was invented for was to make us buy up the rest of the old stock. I say job well done! Funny how prices have risen on the, i5 & I7 K series chips. quick look at Ebuyer confirms it.

Got i7 920 in 2008. 4 more years before potential switch. Plenty of fuel left in X58 platform. Very disappointing chip (when compared to X58), but on the other hand it is god news that I can spend cash on something more worthwhile than SB-E. Like another RAID card and 8 more HDDs.

My old 950's been running virtually non stop on a 4Ghz OC since launch. I was hoping it'd explode in time to justify socket 2011, but now, not so much.

Cranking a 2600K to 5Ghz looks much more interesting anyway :)

my lust for RAM is likely going to mean a jump up to SB-E just to have the 64GB option available, but will wait for the quad version to come out, in the hope it will be sub 400 quid.

Really unsure what to do now. Build 2011 and hope IB E is compatible. Build 1155 and upgrade to IB, or do nothing and way for the new Z77 chipset before I make up my mind.

Bollox. I thought this was going to be simple.

Ask yourself why you want to upgrade, that may help? You already have a fast CPU there :D

    Perhaps you could also look at a "used" i7 970 / i7 980 / i7 980x/990x as a stop gap upgrade?

Clock it up a bit, and give it a new lease of life. :D

Seriously, the vast majority of people with x58 or better would be better off looking at SSDs as upgrades. Overclocking your current chip is more than enough.

Sadly there don't seem to be many about, since that's what I'm trying to do :(
