I want to build a unit to use as an mp3 audio player in the lounge/tv room. Obviously need it to not look like a computer and not looking for a 'Media Centre' as no video capability is needed.

My thoughts were a 7" touch screen, low power mobo/cpu, mini/micro atx case, hard drive, wi-fi and a dedicated sound card. Case is not important as i could build this from scratch

Has anyone tried something like this or got any suggestions for hardware etc? What would be a suitable OS for this? Nothing too overkill.

Would something like an intel atom all in one cpu/mobo be suitable?

Probably not the point but a 7" tablet would be easier.

+1 since that's what your basically building. I'd say a cowon mp3 player otherwise, assuming you can get to grips with them.

What kind of hardware do you have powering your speakers?

Sorry, by 'bigger speakers', I meant not computer specific. Not got any specific ones in mind as they would be purchased as part of the build. Again any recommendations are welcome.

I didnt want it to run through my surround sound as I want it to be stand alone.

Oh by surround sound I meant our home cinema set. Still not big, but bigger than PC speakers.

Thanks for the replies. Its looking like the tablet approach will be more viable for me.

Have a look at the archos ones as they are essentially big mp3 players
