Just bought a pair of radio flash triggers, so went for a play in the dark.

 

Are there any rules here? I took this nice shot near Canary Wharf on early evening on Sunday, I pinked it up a lil bit in Elements10. Hope that's ok.

Forgive my ignorance but what are radio flash triggers?

And these are breathtaking... how many seconds is this open for?

 

It's pretty much just a radio transmitter that plugs into a camera's hotshoe, and triggers an off-camera flash. In these photos it looks like he put the flash inside the building.

 

Radio Flash triggers are little wireless paired gizmos that you clip onto your flash and your camera, so you can position your flash somewhere completely different (on a tripod, say) from your camera without having wires trailing between the two.

They are seriously awesome shots.

Pretty much.

It just a set of (cheap) BV-electronics PT-04 radio triggers and transmitter, and a pair of flash guns. In my case, a Sigma EF-530 Super DG and a Metz 36AF-4P. The Sigma in both cases was on a small tripod in the huts, lighting the inner walls and the Metz was outside to light the outer wall and grass.

The camera was set up on its own tripod, in manual mode and set to:
ISO 1600
f2.8
18mm
15sec

I just manually triggered the flash with the test button one the radio transmitter towards the end of the exposure. I could have attached the PC adapter and triggered it off the camera (the K-x doesn't have an in-built PC port) but this way the camera's position wasn't a factor in the max transmitter range (whish isn't that far anyway.)

The other starlight pics use the same camera settings. On a crop sensor the shutter speed is 300/focal length, if you don't want the stars to move. I use ISO1600 because 3200 is just too noisy. The settings are taken from this tutorial:

Those neat star shots make me wonder just how far should I go at night to avoid all the light-pollution of the city?

I remember how cool it was in the army to be awake at night, all alone, watching over some damn radios and just looking at the stars in complete darkness of an autumn night. Middle of nowhere, very little moon light... Brilliant.

im not sure if this is a thread to post photos you think are good, or your own stuff.

here is a photo i took on my galaxy s2 (only 8mp lol dont hate) of a sunset. i am hoping to get a dslr in the near future.

That Hawkshead Hall Farm shot is nice, NiHilist - although I do find myself thinking it might be a better composition if the tractor was a little more towards the centre.
