Have everyone forgotten the nightmare last year where people waited for Nvidia to release what rumours told us was far better than the offerings from AMD? How long are we to wait this time and how are the results going to be? we really can't tell, and Nvidia has proven themselves as an unreliable and straight up manipulative company when it comes to this.

While AMD is not that much better they have had more of a tendency just to shut up in stead of trying to make a hype over nothing just to manipulate the opponent and the customers.

Unless someone have a working card that can say that it is an idea to wait, we have to assume that Nvidia has nothing, as any information from their side is to be mistrusted.

I know I am coming off a bit harsh here, but they just pissed me off the last time as I really can't stand companies that believes their costumers are someone they have to lie to.

EDIT: Do we have any decent info on Kepler release ?

that was 2010. no new graphics card was released in 2011, not high ends unfortunately. :sigh:

8800GTX bought almost 50% with just new architecture, Fermi bought over 40% compared to 285, new architecture and 55nm to 40nm. this time it will be a major gate shrink (40nm to 28nm, skipping 32nm) plus new architecture.

if it isn't 50% performance bump, i'd expect a much faster card at end of the year when 28nm is matured.

And the 7970/50 brings upto 60% performance increases over the 69**'s ...so what. Ppl seem to believe/ wish for these huge increases by Kepler over Tahti... wishful thinking, yes?

last time i checked, was only average 41% and 37% over previous gen 70/50 respectively.
    (source)

because nVidia doesn't do such a fast generation refresh rate, their per-generation speed bump are generally more than AMD's. (2000 to 5000, fast generation refreshes, relatively smaller speed bumps than 9000 to 200 to 400)

i don't expect massive increase over 7900. not the Q1/Q2 nVidia card. i am expecting a very very fast nVidia card that actually pushes 28nm at end of this year.

Sorry got my head back in 2011 :D

^^ That would be a nightmare both for Nvidia and for the consumers. But it does make sense that they would at least have shown off a prototype if they could compete, as it would make a lot of people wait for their release.

BTW I want the British prices here in DK, the retailers I have found with the 7950 in stock want £450 - £480 for it.

Whoops - meant DisplayPort 1.2 obviously. Apologies for the confusion.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I am never usually so negative but all I want is fair representation and wording for all the manufacturers and I wasn't convinced I saw that here. It still provides the best upgrade if you need to buy right now and that's something I hope we can agree on, because not everyone can wait forever.

During 2011, Bit-Tech reviewed 10(ten) gtx560s... OC models each offering...well something different to the one before I'm sure. After the HD6990 the next most noteworthy AMD card was the 6870x2... reviewed was it?

    Nope.

Nvidia cards seem to always be hot, loud, and waste energy. But the pro Nvidia reviews never seem to mention that. I wouldn't be surprised if their next generation of cards are the same way. That seems to be the only way Nvidia can get speed is by running hot and wasting power, most likely overclocking them to their limits.

Other reviews show the 7950 much better. Plus even the 7950 beats the 580.

Your also foolish if you think Nvidia is going to put out a cheaper card. They never do. AMD is the only one that has the potential to drive prices down.

Yes the 7950 is higher priced than expected, but it also is considerably faster than the previous 6950.

Depends on how far you get back, the 48XX series was VERY hot and used a lot of power (have used/using both the 4850 and 4870). and if you go one generation further back the GTX8800 was a wonderful card.

It is true that AMD have had a few very good years starting with the 4850 and especially the 5XXX series but that can change on a dime, and as far as I have heard from the 570 users that is a great card as well. you really need to see things over a few years in order to make statements like this.

BTW overclocking is whenever you clock the card beyond the clock of the reference card, not something Nividia does

580 can be clocked at a moderate overclock of 925MHz over 772MHz, it is 20% overclock.

typical overclock of "massively overclockable 7970" is 1125MHz, which is 21% over stock.

also, i love how you compare performance of last generation card 40nm card to a new generation 28nm card :thumb:. unlike 5870 obliterating 285, the overpriced 7900 series only scratches the 15 months old 580.

I'll start my comment by saying I am a novice with PC building at the moment, but I still want to ask a few questions on the new 7900 series reviews.

First up, both the 7970 3GB and 7950 3GB are PCI-E 3.0 correct? So current benchmark results are throttled by PCI-E 2.0 CPUs and motherboards? Surely these reviews will have to be re-written when Ivy Bridge and PCI-E 3.0 is released?

Also, the talk of power consumption... There's technology now on these AMD cards to effectively turn off the GPU when there is no output to a monitor(s)? So surely it's be good to post under the review what system draw goes down to when this technology is activated?

PCI-E 3.0 gives zero benefits to 7xxx cards in today's gaming, however in crossfire there might be some tangible benefits.
The real benefits of PCI-E 3.0 come in GPGPU applications.

    +1

For most users, PCI-E 3.0 is another pointless marketing exercise to drive sales for the latest tech. It has next to zero differences for the current generation of cards and I strongly suspect it will be the same for new nVidias cards as well, going on PCI-E 2.0 it will be many generations before we see any real differences so pointless buying a Gen 3 board imho.

practically the same numbers coming out from a new card at practically the same prices, great.
