Windows [SOLVED'ISH] Blu ray playback and codex

    So I have a bluray drive without software and have just found out win 7 can't actually play bluray disks!

    Anyone know of non trial non bs, free way to play bluray disks?

    Unfortunatly its not a problem with win7, its because Sony owns the codec for bluray.

    So you will have to purchase some software that plays it, or rip them to your HDD in MKV format (which can then be played by lots of different free players)

    I use dvdfab passkey trial version to unlock the disc, then MPC-HC can play the film.
    Either that, or use MakeMKV to stream it and open the stream with MPC-HC or VLC.

    I'm more inclined to believe it more a case of MS being sore loosers! there hd dvd format lost the war so they refuse to support any thing else!

    The funny thing is the drive is a sony!

    It has nothing to do with Microsoft being sore losers, and everything to do with Sony owning the Blu Ray standard - the reason Blu Ray player support isn't built into Windows is that Sony and other companies in the Blu Ray consortium charge a licence fee to be able to play Blu Ray movies. This licence fee is quite large - somewhere of the order of $10-15 per player - not to mention the additional development costs for Microsoft.

    There is, of course, also the additional issue that Blu Ray movies rely on Java for their interactivity - something which would cause ructions in the Microsoft camp!

    VLC 2.0 is landing sometime in the next week and apparently plays Blu Rays, and it is free.

    I have the rc but it needs the aacs lib compiled of which I have no idea about doing.

    Have you tried following these instructions?

    Alternatively, get AnyDVD HD, which decrypts commercial Blu Ray discs fine.
