Cooling Cooler for my 2500k

So my 2500k has been sitting under a stock heatsink at stock frequencies for a while now. I'm itching to have a go overclocking it (and am getting sick of the noise) but before I go and pick out a cooler for it I wanted to ask what your opinions were on using my old Thermalright Ultra Extreme on it. The TRUE currently still resides on my q6600 (which is doing a marvelous job as my new server).

So, my options are either:

1. Move the TRUE onto the 2500k, having to buy a mounting kit for it and getting a new cooler for the Q6600 (its own stock cooler has long since gone).

or

2. Just buy a brand new cooler for the 2500k, and if so, which one? The Hyper 212 seems pretty good performance for the money, but the Dark Rock Advanced seems awesome. I'm thinking also about taking the plunge (I can't be the first to use this pun) into a closed loop water cooler. How safe are they with regards to leaking? Would, say, an H60 be worth it over the Dark Rock Advanced? I'd be looking at getting 4.5ghz out of the 2500k, but I also want it to be quiet while at that speed.

 

I like my gelid tranquilo. Very quiet and decent enough cooling.

On a budget the Hyper 212 Evo is what I would recommend. It's super quiet and super good cooling for a super cool price. Have it in my desktop and in a work computer cooling an overclocked FX-8120.

 

I was using a Akasa Venom on my old 2500K running at 4.8ghz using 1.395v and it kept the temps below 70c on each core, and then when I swapped the fans and put 2 Scythe fans the temp's went down below 60c.

 

i like my noctua nh-d14

its very quiet and cools well. but if you are after pure cooling then there might be better alternatives.

 

Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced is a lovely cooler. I'm using one on my i7 and temps rarely exceed 63*C at full load with a moderate overclock on it.

 

I have a Thermaltake Frio on my 2500k at 4.5 - 4.9 and at full load I never exceed 60 degrees with the fans on low. That's a delta T of around 40 degrees. Best performing cooler I've ever owned period.

The looks are a bit Marmite but you will not find much else that can exceed its performance!

EDIT: To answer your question on the TRUE, it will work but with a decent overclock I reckon you'll see temps in the 75 - 80 degrees range. Why not try it? If it works for you then that's money saved, and if not then at least you'll know. How much is the kit?

 

If this is the kit you need, I'd say for a fiver it'd be worth a punt.

 

As your already a Thermalright user I would recommend the Thermalright HR-02 Macho. Excellent performance for very low noise.

I have to say +1 for the Tranquillo, I have a 2500k using one at 4.5Ghz and it doesn't go above 65 degrees. No need to buy anything bigger unless you want to push further.

 

if your after pure cooling, better alternatives than an NH-D14?

I'm just trying to build my first pc with that cooler and I5-2500k, MSI P67A-GD53 and my BIOS says I have an idle temp of 52-54C

something can't be right with mine... any suggestions anyone??

I have taken the cooler off and applied more TIM and re fitted the cooler to get it down to 52/54 from 64! But it still doesn't seem to be good enough

 

Was there a bit of clear plastic on the heatsink base? If so did you remove it?

 

It's funny you mention that because the last time me and my dad was building a pc he forgot to take, of the cover of the EK waterblock and then as wondering why the temp's we so high.

 

To Amsalpedalb - I've got the same setup, I had a Q6600 cooled by the ThermalRight Ultra 120 eXtreme and upgraded to a 2500K, so I bought the mounting kit.

It works very nicely - overclocked to 4.4 Ghz, it runs in the high 20's to low 30'd at idle, and mid to high 50's under full load on all 4 cores.
