Ahhhh Sci-Fi...I guess I should chip in: Starting with serious series based Sci-Fi Star Trek : Voyager Star Trek : DS9 (Especially when the war really kicks off) Dr Who The Event (Unfortunatly it's been canned) X-Files Moving onto the comedy series based Sci-Fi Red Dwarf Futurama Finally...the films Aliens (at least rewatch the second one - you might come to like it) Star Wars IV,V and VI (again, give it another go) District 9 I'll add a couple more tomorrow if I remember.
Normally I'm not into anime, but Cowboy Bebop is something else (tv series, the movie did'nt grab me). Ideally start at the beginning and try a few episodes. There is a story arc of sorts. The music is great with a different music style each episode (see the 1st clip below) The last notable sci-fi book I read was 'The Windup Girl' by Paolo Bacigalupi. It'll make you wince but it's amazing stuff.
Well if your up some some reading then I suggest anything by Iain M Banks. His culture novels are by far the best science fiction I've ever read. I'm reading rendezvous with Rama at the moment which is excellent.
more massive quotage: I knew about eureka being a sister show [purely because some of eureka's characters have appeared in it], didn't know alphas was/is too noted on the list even if i didin't think of it as scifi you and me both didn't care for it personally noted like dollhouse i stopped watching it when i heard it'd been canned noted Caprica was terrible... watched the first couple of episodes and that was enough for me seen 'em [will give Journeyman a look though] seen everything on that list barring The Event and the X-Files, i really liked district 9 partly the fact it wasn't set in *insert major american city here*. I didn't like the Star Wars films when i first saw them [when they released the first digital remaster iirc, before the prequels came out]... and Lucas seems intent on making them worse in new and, I would say 'imaginative' ways [only he doesn't appear to have an imagination], with every chance he gets. Liked Predator [somewhat liked #2], didn't care for the alien films [spending many hours to dissecting the first film and discussing HR Giger's designs at college probably hasn't helped]... and we don't talk about AVP... It didn't happen, it was just a joke poster I saw once...
Remembered some more that are *not* fantasy but I recall finding them in the sci-fi/fantasy section of our local store back in the day when it was cheapish to rent... Quatermass and the Pit (I was pretty young when I saw this, it creeped me out) Starman 1984 Clockwork Orange (did not like, btw) 12 Monkeys Contact Mad Max Did someone mention Slipstream already? I could listen to the soundtrack tune all day...Then Jericho "The Big Area" (more recent) Pi Children Of Men (Scifi doesn't need to be about spaceships, right?)
Just to add the recommendation of sci-fi reading, the Gap Series by Stephen Donaldson. It can be a little brutal at times but damn it's good. Contact was a funny one. first time I saw it I thought it was absolutely brilliant, the second time I couldn't work out why I had liked it in the first place. Odd. 12 Monkeys, top suggestion And just one last one to add some quality cheese factor in there - Robot Jox.
More reading material in The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It isn't sci-fi as such but does deal with alternate realities (if you have seen The Mist, that is basically a tear in the fabric of reality that allows things to move into our world and back and has been linked to the Dark Tower). If you have time on your hands, as of the end of this month, it's 8 books. Then there is the game of linking all of Kings other works to it by certain characters appearing in the series... Well worth a look. Anime, check out Vexille. Soundtrack is pretty boss hog and the CG is really rather good!
^ This. The Culture novels are superb. Of course Asimov's Foundation series is a must read too. The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons is a pretty good read too.
Dune by Frank Herbert, absolute classic. (How come no one's already said this?!) Everything by Asimov Solaris

^^ This!! So long as u stay away form the newer books done by Kevin J Anderson and Brian Herbert. They were pants!! Nights Dawn Trilogy by Peter F Hamilton is amazing imo but can be hard slog getting through them! Revelation Space series by Alastair Reynolds is also a good read.
How about The Mote in Gods Eye by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle (think I spelt that right), its a first contact novel with a truely alien race. I thought it was excellent and it won a few awards at the time, although the sequel does give more on the story it really felt like padding. I always thought Dune was a bit dull, there were really good bits but they were a bit lost amongst all the political ducking and diving.

I've yet to see Hitch Hickers Guide to the Galaxy mentioned! Get the original radio dramatisation or get the book. The film isn't that great imo. Still the funniest thing I've ever listened to I think. Seriously get it! EDIT: I'd also check out any of the Godzilla movies from Japan. They range from classics to terrible. Final Wars is hilarious for all the wrong reasons. If you can get a copy cheap have a watch.
