What do you think this will do to SB prices?

I think im going to look for a 2700k 2nd hand but have no idea what a good price is now... £170 maybe?!

 

Yep, also on a P55 motherboard here. The UEFI bios interests me - that could shave about ten seconds off my boot time. And with Haswell coming May-June 2013 (being a tock I'm hoping for a nice performance boost), I think I'll hang on for that. Although with all things tech, there's always something round the corner that's worth waiting for...

If you ask about new ones, then the answer is : absolutely nothing.

 

@jimmyjj - I don't play any of those games so I can't comment. Most of the games I play run at 60 fps on maxed settings at 1920x1200 and that's good enough for me. Since I cannot stomach screen tearing, there's no requirement to go above 60 fps so a more powerful CPU would be a waste of money for me when my Core i7-920 handles every I throw at it. Let's face it about 85% of PC games are multiformat and simply don't require masses of processing and graphical grunt anyway; likely won't until the new consoles arrive in 12-18 months time. By then Haswell will be out along with new and more powerful graphics cards. I think I can wait.

 

I just created an account to tip my hat to the reviewers for including Arma II in the benchmarks. Another reason why I love BitTech's style Crysis is still relevant, but I'm just glad Arma II is there

I think these tests can be a bit misleading for some people. A lot of the editing and multitasking benchmarks you're using are clearly not very well optimised for multi-threading. These benchmarks would suggest that the IB chip is as good, or better than a 12 thread SB-E chip. Clearly not true. Why do you insist on using those frankly outdated CPC benchmarks?

I'd love to see this chip encoding with Adobe Media Encoder or something else that uses all threads and compare it to SB-E.

If your test suite IS using all threads, then I can't bleeding wait for IB-E!!

 

Still not quite time to change from my i7 920. Maybe another tick-tock cycle first.

 

Exactly my thoughts. I'm borderline tempted, but it's not such a huge jump. I'll stick with my 920, which as it runs everything I want at full whack, I'm not worried about.

Seems a lot of Nehalem owners were in the same boat with IB, but it's just not a large enough or absolutely necessary upgrade.

Plus my 930 is still a beast of a chip

 

Harry, what do you mean with this? What Sandy Bridge features does Z68 support that Z77 doesn't?

Also, how do you explain the very slightly worse WPrime results compared to Sandy Bridge? Both i7 and i5 Ivy Bridge exhibit this anomaly over their Sandy Bridge counterparts, despite the 100 MHz bump in frequency. Weren't there supposed to be some IPC improvements too?

They mean if you put a SB CPU in Z77 board, you won't get PCI-E3.0 and some other features which are made possible by IB CPU.

 

As it's formulated, it leaves me with the understanding that if you put a Sandy Bridge CPU in a Z77 motherboard some of the CPU features won't be available.

 

Time to upgrade I think - been holding onto my Core2 Quad Q6600 for long enough (and been building too many Sandybridge machines for friends/family LOL)

 

Pcie 3.0 is a CPU feature the Pcie lanes are on the CPU on intel CPUs have been for ages
Usb3.0 native support would be another missing item

 

Well, the answer is what i said. You will miss IB features, period.

USB3 will be there, USB3 is Z77 feature, not IB feature.

In short you lose :
- PCI-E 3.0, as it is a CPU feature
- HD4000/HD2500, as it is a CPU feature
