I don't want to come off as some sort of music snob or anything, because I'm really not. I'm not that guy, and I certainly hate it when I hear other people do what I'm about to do, but I'm going to do it anyway.

I've been listening to Kimbra since her Settle Down video was uploaded to vimeo. I've been waiting patiently for her album to be released, and I've been following her on twitter. There's just something so right about her as an artist and you can tell she isn't another talentless idiot like Lady Gaga, etc.

So I saw her post to twitter when she did a feature with Miami Horror, and I bought their album and it's pretty alright as a whole.

And later I saw the tweet about her feature with Gotye. I thought the song was great and the video made it even better. I bought the album and was disappointed with it as a whole, but listened to the whole thing many times. I showed it to a friend and we talked about it and about other music not very well known in the US like Sigur Ros.

And now, like . . . a long time later some group does a cover and it goes viral, which is fine. Like I said, I'm not a snob and I really hate the "I saw them when they weren't well known" people.

But now there are covers of covers and a million copycats. It's a great song, but I enjoyed it and played it out eight months ago. Now it's on the radio and it's like hearing that album you've listened to one too many times. And . . . here's the part where I sound like a snob . . . I feel like when a band gets really popular that it sort of kills what made them special for me, like my fandom of the person/group is diminished by the people who came late to the game.

So yeah, call me a snob, but I think this "Somebody I Used to Know" stuff was old when the viral thing started, and a million reposts of stuff we've all already seen doesn't help my irritation when I have to hear the million versions of the song in studio played by some idiot girl with poor taste in music.
