Hi, I've been tinkering with a few SSD's all lashed together in a RAID 10 config at work recently, but have been having a few issues around drive space etc. Reading up on it, there are a few posts around from '09 saying that most hardware RAID controllers can't handle SSD's being sent the TRIM command. Does anyone know if this is still the case? Cheers,
Yes - it's still the case that SSDs in raid don't get trim... ...the only real exception being that, with the right OS, OCZ's VCA (used on the pcie cards & & HSDL SSDs) will do. Otherwise, we're still waiting for intel to release drivers that support trim in R0 & R1 for their onboard controllers - 'should' be before too long... ...but esp the SFs (with the V4 & then Samsung 830 following behind) have good enough GC without trim for most workloads... ...very heavy ones may need the occasional overnight boot to bios.
Ummmm... Assuming we're looking at consumer SSDs here, which models exactly with the intels...? Well, certainly the 520s/330s will be - as they're SFs... ...but there are some really shocking intel SSDs that rely entirely on manually running their toolbox thing to keep them maintained at all - not least as, whilst indilinx (& others) added in trim & GC via a f/w update on their current SSD controllers back in 2009, intel (& a couple of others - i think Samsung 'may' have been ther other SSD controller manufacturer that's still around... ...but don't quote me on it) didn't. Otherwise, with intel's enterprise SSDs, most of the improvement comes from *huge* amounts of over provisioning - & you can get much the same effect with any consumer SSDs by under partitioning by a similarly huge amount.
