Pypes Pipe Bomb muffler delete exhaust. I'll be ordering a C&L Racer cold air induction system next week, so I'll post another vid when that's fitted for contrast. It sounds pretty wild now, so I can't wait until then.

 

That sound is Intoxicating. I want a car that makes that kind of a noise.

Get something with an American V8 in it then... or at least a proper 90degree V8 if you must go with ze Germans.

You can get a lot of V8 for very little if you look around. Insurance is cheap too as you go through specialist dealers, and road tax is a flat £200 a year.

Keep that for weekends, and commute to work in a Micra or something... that's what I do.

 

Or go British for a little bit more and get a TVR (Chim, Cerbera, Wedge, V8S) which could sound like this :

Also.. the V8 in the Cerbera is a flat plane crank job.... doesn't really sound like a V8.


On the whole though.. I agree... some cheap TVRs around now. An old V8S would be a good way into the V8 hobby


I do like the lopey cam in that Chim above though. That's the only thing missing from the new Mustang "Modular" engine, as the variable cam timing smooths out the idle. There are things you can do about it though.... which is the third item on my shopping list.

 

OK, it's originally American, but they didn't like it and scrapped it, then Rover found it and took it. I need to listen to some Cerberas at the next TVR meet, I've never really noticed a massive difference between the AJPs and the RV8s.

Cerbs sound fab... but they don't sound like a traditional 90degree V8.. because they're not. They're a 75degree flat plane V8... so they sound more like a Ferrari than a muscle car. Still a nice noise though.


The Buick 215 (Rover V8) was "scrapped" yes.... but it was a very successful engine for Buick and Olds, and Pontiac and they produced over 400,000 units. They ceased production of it in 1964 if memory serves me because it was expensive to produce and they developed an iron block equivalent. It also had some persistent issues with oil seal leaks (a problem that Rover inherited). The V6 derivative of the "BOP215" lived on to around 2009 however.

Basically.... the Rover V8 is as American as apple pie... no matter how many times you say "Rover V8"

Oh god yes, a Griff with straight through exhausts, pre-cat or cats removed sounds epic. Heard some really really nice ones at the Chatsworth meets, might even have some videos of them coming along the drive.

one of the things I miss from the 3v engine is the sound. The 3v sounded great out the box. I never saw the need to rip out the old mufflers. The 5.0 sounds tame in comparison, I think the boss302 exhaust with the plates deleted is in the works for me. That being said, I am European.... but I just don't like cars that sound like high revving bikes.

A few years ago I was at Watkins glen watching a race, the ford racing 5.0L 3v engine had the most monstrous sound I have ever heard. I could feel the exhaust pulses on and in my chest. Those race engines made over 500HP n/a and revved to 8 grand. Thinking back, the 5.0L now is nearly that and production.

Pook your car gave me shivers. Man do I miss the 3v.

 

finally got a newer car to replace my rapidly declining '89 ford escort daily driver with almost 300,000 miles on it.

its a 2000 ford focus wagon (or "estate" as i believe its called over there). the body is in pretty decent shape. lots of new parts on it including new tires, brakes all around, timing belt/water pump, drive belt, battery, and more. all this for just $300!


















oh, there is just one minor technicality:







the 2.0 SOHC motor they used in the focus' of this generation had a bad habit of dropping the valve seats out of the head and doing...that^

even so, i think i can have the motor back together (with updated valve seats to prevent this happening again) for less than $600 so ill still be driving a $3000 car for about $900....cant complain

 

Believe it or not, but that sounds like my A5 from 4000RPM's upwards.

 

Surely the bottom end is a write-off after the piston skirt has collapsed and valve seat has been compressed so many times?

 

Bearings and rods will be a write off for sure, but the crank might be all right and I'm guessing the block will need to be honed and decked, and obviously the head will need some work on the valve seats. If you can do it all for as little as £600 you've got a bargain, but I must say I'm skeptical...

 

Just drop in a DOHC 2.0L zetec motor in it. Pick up a decent one from a rusted hunk and go. Everything should match up. No vvt so the only thing is injectors and bolts, maybe a few sensors here or there. Hot little engines. I could be wrong though.

As for the mustang sounding like the a5 from 4000 and up. I don't think so. It must be something with the audio. The 3v sounds more like a small block or even a 390ford. The 5.0L has a whiney sound to it thanks to the 80lb mufflers. In any case, I belive the 3v was one of the best sounding engines ever. It thumps along at idle, and revs like a drag motor ontop. The one description I can give it is it sounds NASTY. But in a good I will rip your head off way.
