The noise levels are disappointing considering that's the only reason I may have considered buying a card like this.

Because re-testing every single GPU on new drivers every time they get released is very time consuming - each card takes around 3 hours to test. We tend to update them 3-4 times a year at most.

Is there really no better way of air cooling graphics cards than making the heatsink thicker and blocking yet another expansion slot?

Can't cards be made taller so they fill up that 2 inch gap I have currently between my card and the side panel of my case?

They could, but not every case has that much room, so you'd end up with the same problem of some people not being able to fit it in.

Some manufacturers are already kind of doing this too - look at the side on shot on the first page of the 7870 IceQ we reviewed last week.

This is both like - and not like - being an Amiga user in about 1994. Back then, we had heaps of software appearing that was hungry for performance, but nobody was about to push out faster hardware. Now we have all these massively high-performance options, but what do we get?

    Console games.

    What is point?

Higher resolutions or multiple monitors. These cards are indeed overkill for most though

Disappointed with triple slot & louder fans given how good my 570 Phantom is and this was a potential upgrade path for me. Time to look at other options.

First sentence. We were blow away...

Shouldn't it be blown away? There's some very odd grammatical errors within this article.

Ironically, I think you mean "There're some very odd grammatical errors..." :D If you're going complain about poor grammar, you'd better use the correct grammar yourself! :nono:

Typo: shouldn't that be 7970 in the first paragraph of the review?

Love the Phantoms but I've only a mATX rig, so this won't be getting into it anytime soon unfortunately.

Uh... why does it state that this card has Crossfire, under 'Inputs'? Did nVidia finally manage to get AMD drunk enough to have a one night stand, and this card is like the one red-head in the family?
