ok guys I've spoke about this before, and now my 8800 GTX seems to be on the way out. The only thing I seem to struggle with is BF3 (high/medium settings @ 1920 x 1080) ~35 - 50 FPS which is playable most of the time but sometimes causes issues with crashing and drivers going mad. I don't see the point in the upgrade unless I can have everything in ultra on BF3. I was thinking of a GTX 560 Ti, as this should do the job. But ofcourse I don't want to be in the same boat in a few years whereas the 8800 GTX has done be right for what, 5 years? would it be a smart move going for a GTX 660? Budget is £300 MAX
Wait till the "rush" dies down and prices start to get discounted.... IMHO dunx P.S. Latest generation saves power, but more brute force from a new GTX 580 ?
if you have the cash I would go for the 660ti m8 . The jury still seems out but for 275 ish you can even get the 3gb versions

nvidia 670 or 580 providing you can get one for low enough. £220/230 odd would do it... maybe less second hand, but it doesn't look likely. Prices are way too high still. Always are though with the old top tier cards. I've umm-ed and arr-ed over a 7870 in recent times. Similar performance to teh 580 from what I can tell from Anandtech bench in previous times with a fair bit of overclocking potential. Especially if they manage to let you overvolt, as at the moment there is no overvolting on them (last I checked) Thinking about it though, you are playing BF3 so you probably want to stick to nvidia Edit: Actually the 580 and 660 are close perf wise from what I remember, it may make sense to shell out £260?
I'd opt for a used GTX580. They can be had for cheaper than 300 smackers and they perform quite admirably. Plus it'll be about 4x the strength.
Personally I'd go for one of the premium 660Ti's, like the Asus DirectCU2. As it'll out perform a 580, be in your budget, use less power than a 580, make less noise than a 580 and you'll probably be able to overclock it even further... Why go for old tech, when you can have new...
I agree with the 660 Ti or 670 options - he can get a used GTX 580 for £200 quite easily, but if his budget is up to £300 why should he bother?
670 is so much faster than any of the other cards mentioned I wouldnt bother saving the 40 or 50 quid to go for a 580 or a 660.
It's not about power mate, it's about money - as you said, you're not going to notice much difference in performance between the cards suggested. Bottom line: would you prefer to save money or are you not bothered about spending up to £300? If you would rather save money, then obviously a preowned GTX570 or GTX580 is your best bet.
depends wether you want to play maxed out with say 60-70fps minimum or maxed out 30-40fps minimum. Personally for decent BF3 gameplay the higher minimum frames make a wolrd of difference.
GTX670 or HD7950 would be where I would be looking. The 670 has the "out of the box" performance whilst the HD7950 can be had for less and should overclock to similar performance levels quite easily. 660TI is only worth it if you can get it for a good price.
The 670 is admittedly an awesome card. But it really depends on how willing you are to spend money. As far as I know, the 660Ti perfroms slightly faster than a 580. But if you can hunt down a bargain, you can usually spot a 580 for 60% of the 660Ti's asking price. Mind you I'm cheap.
I'm in much the same boat,just looking to drag a few more fps out of the old build before big upgrade time. Much I could look at that'd improve on an N280gtx with a large price tag attached? Sent from the future!
