+1 for Necrophagist and Mastadon. Been listening to a lot of 'djent' recently, which is pretty technical...bands like TesseracT and Periphery
Now there's a band I could strangely never get into: Meshugga. Dunno why, but Math Metal mostly leaves me cold... there IS however one exception: Unexpect - Inside a Flesh Aquarium the other albums are nowhere near, as far as I am concerned, but once you get past the "OMG WEIRD!" factor, that album shines. Also in a similarly weird section of my regular listening lineup is Liberteer - Better to die on your feet than live on your knees. It's probably best described as Civil War Era Grindcore. It's fast, furious and screamy, then breaks into horns and pipes, only to go back to grinding and screaming without warning... also, the album is something like 20-odd minutes short.
I don't have much to bring, but two bands in my collection haven't been mentioned yet - Borg 64, for some geek metal I suppose, and Torture Killer, for pretty obscene lyrics but very listenable riffs.
Found it within minutes via alternative routes? I'd agree with a fair amount of the posts in this thread, if you like technical, math style metal with a sever lack of melody. Then check out Dillinger Escape Plan:
This 1000%. If you want a good selection then grabbing Demanufacture, Obsolete and Digimortal will keep your ears happy, but their pre-fame material (Concrete, Soul of a New Machine) is harder edged still - more death/grindcore, where the later albums are more industrial. Also, grab some Bathory albums from the late 80s for some interesting Black Metal blueprints, some surprisingly excellent tracks.
Do you have any idea how much of my time this thread has used up in the last few days I've just been listening to every suggestion, some good, some bad (to my taste anyway), but Unexpect is....well....ummmm.........there are no words. It's like Phantom of the Tourettes Opera......or something.
I love it! I love Protest The Hero for similar reasons, it's just crazy! Hasn't got anything on 65daysofstatic for originality though. No one has.
