Are there any early adopters in the UK on here? I am going to get a Nokia Lumia 920 but I can't decide whether to go for an EE contract or go for the 3g option. Is 4g noticeably faster whilst out and about? Do you find that you use more data each month?
I would check your coverage first. Looking at your "London" location I think most of it is covered. But the area surrounding London is rubbish. From what I have read review wise, the speed to brilliant, but does vary even on the areas that are covered. I think as it develops it will be a brilliant service. But with the lack of 4G outside of London at the data cap of 8gb on the highest £56.00 tariff I think they are really stinging those people that do adopt it early. If it was me, I'd wait for other operators to release their 4G offerings to bring some competition to the market.
Been looking at the nexus 4. No LTE but also no contract so when it works there's no problem with upgrading...
I'm going to (hopefully) get a 920 tomorrow and was thinking whether 4g was worth it. i spend a lot of time in brum which is supposed to get cover, but live in coventry where there isn't any. I'm not really fussed as 3g is fast enough for what you do while out and about and there's often wifi available. until more operators get it sorted and the coverage gets better, you'll end up paying through the nose for something you don't really benefit from. in the mean time we can sit there being smug with an awesome phone
I've been debating about changing from three network to EE for 4G. I stuck to three network on 3G for these reasons. As I'm on the' one plan' I get unlimited data on 3G. 3G is everywhere that I park up. I wouldn't bother with 4G yet as it is just localised to big cities. I would get a fast 3G phone that supports HSPDA+ as it is capable of upto 21Mbps. 4G is a big marketing hype. Yes you can get great download and upload speeds, but to be restricted to a maximum of 8GB a month, and to certain cities, doesn't sound great to me, when I can use that in less than a week. This is why I have gone for another 2 yr contract on three, as it it will be at least that until 4G starts to be rolled out in surrounding areas out side of cities.
8gb a month on a phone is a crazy amount of bandwidth, how the hell do you use 8gb lol. I struggle to break 1gb a month
Because working away I use my phone to Internet tether. Sky go BBC iplayer Porn Bit-tech Downloading films Online gaming. I usually download a film every day. So as I like my MKV videos, I usually download 2GB+ films whilst on the move, so it's ready for when I park up.
You are a special case though t_g... Most folks won't get anywhere near 8GB/month, the advantage of 4G is the lack of waiting around when you want content.
True. But although I have seen videos of speedtest on LTE phones hitting 32Mbps DL and 20Mbps UL, these reachable speeds are dependent on how many people are using 4G at the time.
According to my phone bill I've used the following for the last 5 months: 17GB 22GB 20GB 19GB 13GB and so on... Like TG, I'm on the one plan and I'm about to renew my 2 year contract, 4G is nice and fast but when your 3G connection is better than most people's home broadband, why do you need more? I can stream HD stuff from iplayer without any problems on 3G. Of course I would like 4G, but there's really no need for it for the average consumer just now.
Those are still crazy numbers through a phone. Most people are sub-2GB users, majority of them sub-1GB... But of course most people doesn't watch online video and listen to online music through mobile data.
I don't disagree, but I only use that much since I'm on an unlimited plan. If I was capped I would download stuff at home and transfer it on to my phone, either way I would download the same amount, I just happen to download it through my phone. 4G is just not worth it at the moment, although it was probably never going to be since it's just out and only 1 network is offering it. I look forward to the 4G auctions next year.
They are a different bandwidth stream and incompatible with existing phones like iphone 5 or lumia If you want 4g on your lum or ip5 you need to be with EE. Tg and you are very special usage type people, I stream music myself using my phone and still struggle to break 1gb.
You can buy a LTE (4G) ready phone on any network provider now, and have it enabled on 4G when that provider rolls it out. P.S I like being Special...
Recently I bought a galaxy note 2 on three, with the unlimited data and stuffs. I've found that in the first few days, I had used 4GB of data- I was considering a cheaper option, but meh. I don't see that much of a difference with 4G, anyway. I'm not playing online games on my phone anyway, so getting around 6 mb/s is good enough for me- It's faster than a few of my freinds home internet too. I really don't see that much of an advantage to 4G, especially at EE's pricing. If Three (Four?) can come out with a unlimited data 4G plan, and do as well as their 3G is doing, count me in.
Picked up my 920 today. Only just got it on and sim wont activate till tomorrow, but so far i'm dead impressed with it. I've only got 1gb per month with orange, but unlimited free usage of bt wifi hotspots and get free sky sports streaming which is not included in the allowance
