    Well said, brother.

Most people don't understand why I love my 12 year old Accord so much. They just don't get it because it's fairly old, it has tons of mileage (almost 300K km) and it's slow.

I have almost died twice in this car. I feel like 'we shared' something together and I will be extremely happy when I get back home in less than a month. It will have been 4 months since I have driven stick and actually enjoyed driving ! Over the last 3 months, I drove the following cars :
    -2012 Hyundai Santa Fe
    -2012 Mitsubishi Outlander
    -2012 Nissan Altima 2.5
    -2012 Kia Forté
-2012 Nissan Altima 2.5 (another one!)
    -2012 Chevrolet Traverse
    -2012 Nissan Maxima (290hp!)
    -2012 Chrysler 300
-2012 Nissan Altima (another one haha)
    -2012 Chevrolet Malibu
    -2012 Chevrolet Traverse (again !)

And all of those cars felt like I was driving a giant turd compared to my 12 year old Accord. The only one I kinda liked was the Maxima because of its power. It was still boring though because it had only two pedals

If you have the equipment I often think it's worth taking the engine out for those kind of jobs - do various oil seals and the clutch while you're at it, tidy up the engine bay as well. If you have a crane it's not that hard a job, and far less irritating than skinning your arm trying to do the timing belt in a cramped bay.

Would you advise buying new fittings/hoses/etc? My father, who admittedly is not a particular expert when it comes to these things but generally knows what he's talking about, says that old fittings have a nasty habit of finally breaking when unsettled often producing some vital, hard-to-diagnose fault.

Fittings and hoses can usually be reused, just worth checking them for cracks or splits after removal. If you use an actual pair of hose pilers then 90% time they pop off fine

If its a stupid hose or fitting that's a pain to replace due to its location then defiantly worth replacing when the chance rises.

    my lord its beautiful!

Costing me nearly £300 a month! the car only cost £650!!!

I've been thinking though i have a road legal quad bike which comes under "private light goods" on insurance so i could insure that for next to nothing build no-claims for say £60 a month, then use the policy for a car.

If they're looking tired I'd replace them, but most will last for many, many years. One thing I have done on my car is replace the horrid self-tightening hose clamps with a more traditional style... Makes it a million times easier to get things on and off!

Those old accords were VERY cool, though.
Were I not planning on buying a Toyota 86 in Jan/Feb '13, I'd be looking at something old as well... probably an ancient M3 or something.
Nothing wrong with old cars. :thumb:

    You mean these infernal creations?

The bane of my existence; I HATE these things. Even with the special, cable operated pliers they suck. If you've ever managed to stap yourself in the thumbnail with one you know how I loathe them...

Yep, those are the ones. Very useful in an OE situation, but not good for removing later! I don't have the pliers, but used a pair of mole grips instead which worked reasonably well, still a ballache though. Finally got rid of the last ones a couple of weeks ago. :D

£3,600 for a year of insurance?! Dear lord why?!

These things are horrid. When they get looser you can easily slip pipes on or off, but god forbid you want to move / remove one!

True SOB's they are, they get binned as they come off and replaced with jubilee clamps that I pack with grease to keep the screw free. Half the time a jubilee fails because the threads rot out and it pops free.

I tend to use the enclosed-thread jubilee clips and just put a couple of drops of engine oil in them, keeps them nice. :)
