its very true - sport and documentaries are about the only good things in 3d - a friend who bought a top end 50" 3d tv , hardly watches in 3d now - they even called up sky to cancel the 3d part of the package.


IMO I think its a gimmick that going the way of Betamax - super hi def > 3d

 

The biggest hassle to 3d @ home is the expense and shortcomings of the bloody thing.

£45-60 for additional specs, ghosting and flickering, broadcasters not standardising the Left eye or Right eye first frame problem (resulting in back to front/distorted images) , etc.

Just face it, it's not mature enough for mainstream commercial use.

And the content they produce for 3d is comical at best.

I still love it, but it really needs some re-working to get to where it needs to be.

 

If there's one thing that really ****s me off... it's the 3d hate trolls who do nothing but diss anything 3d. I've used 3d shutter glasses since about 2004. I don't need to watch everything in 3d but there's stunning 3d content out there if you look beyond boring bbc bollocks and hollywood movies.

A friend of mine has a £1300 samsung 3d TV and he watches a lot of 3d content.

I also play some games in 3d. Tomb raider is simply stunning in 3d and switching back to 2d sucks the life out of it. I don't need to see everything in 3d but I like having the choice.

Just get sick of the stupid ignorant sweeping statements people make about 3d.

Sport and documentaries the only good thing? I have 3d art video produced by a modern artist who creates fractal 3d world art installations. 3d porn and there are some great movies out there.

I wonder what the **** people expect from 3d? Do you think it's gonna make you jizz in your pants?

I have a lot of 3d stuff and it doesn't give me headaches, radiation sickness or make me vomit on my keyboard.

The reason that 3d is being cancelled is because quite frankly there are so many complainy gits out there who hate anything that's not a bog standard flat image. I hate to think how some of you will react when Oculus rift HD comes to market.

 

Sports docs + films are where its at but theres very little extra content id personally care to pay for.

UK tv your forced into expensive blue rays £25 + for your average 3d movie. Or a Full Sky subscription which is about £60 a month ( you need the HD pack to get the 3D part )

 

Well you're a bit screwed if you have lazy eye but yes, I concur, 3d is bloody good fun.

Last year I decided it was time to try it after being a hater. Now I know I can't use shutter active 3d as it makes me hurl. Being an Aspie my eyes are incredibly sensitive to light and flickering (I throw up if sat in the back of a car, for example).

I decided to go with a passive screen (Lg 23") that I found on Amazon for £140 with two pairs of glasses.

It was a rocky start, given that I was trying to use a AMD card (7970 with Tridef) and I nearly threw in the towel as AMD and 3d don't mix.

However, I traded the 7970 for a pair of brand new 480s and installed the EDID override (used the Zalman profile) and I gotta say 3d was absolute cheescakeage.

Fallout 3 was sublime in 3d, as were the two Left 4 Dead games. I still maintain that if you ain't lobbed a pipebomb and stood close by in 3d then you ain't lived.

Inspecting the zombies once they had been splatted in 3d was also a riot. The boomers look hilarious modeled in 3d when cut in half

Sadly I haven't had a desk for about a year so I sold it on for the time being, but the experience is most certainly excellent.

Even with passive the original Crysis sports some pretty amazing pop out

If a 3d Blu ray is overpriced then wait for the price to drop as we do with computer games.

I think the problem is that some people have limited experience of it and just dismiss it. That is evident when they say there isn't much use for it except sport and docu. Some great movies out there utilising 3d very well. A lot of non-mainstream stuff too that most people never try because they don't know about it.

Left 4 D does indeed look great in 3d. What I like is the way 3d pulls you in. Just adding that Z plane makes a world of difference. My GF sat down to watch a 3d animated movie with me on my 24" LG 120hz monitor and she was blown away. She said when you watch it in 3d... it suddenly doesn't seem like a 24" screen. You have a sense of it being bigger.

Will buy a 3d TV when I can afford one.

I don't feel a need to have everything 3d... The apprentice is fine in 2d. I think Battlestar remake would have been great in 3d with the space battles etc.

Wonders of the universe would also have been incredible.

I like having the choice. I just get annoyed at some of the anti-3d people spew.

 

I've got a cracking 3D LG TV and the 3D channel on Sky is free as long as you have the Movie and Sports channels. I've got a LG Soundbar which also plays 3D BluRays.

If I find a particular programme is in 3D, I'll turn over to the 3D channel if it isn't, I don't. When I do, I find the content is fantastic. Football is an amazing experience, one I would highly recommend any of the haters to try. Unless of course you hate football aswell, in that case I can't help you at all.

It's a gimmick I feel will only become truly worthwhile when 3D goes glassfree and affordable as the TV's are today. It will happen and sooner rather than later as well.

 

Absolutely. It's almost like they have rendered your game in a box about 2ft deep and you can almost reach in and pick up a character and pull him out kicking and screaming

Dirt 3 was a complete triumph in 3D. The dashboards just looked utterly incredible. So real you could almost reach in and turn on your headlights

There is a bit of snobbery with 3D. Most say that you need a 50" screen to enjoy it but that's pretty much B$.

I think in honesty that 3D has a bad rep because it's expensive. It's kinda like Alienware. Alienware (and now Dell) don't really do anything wrong. Their systems are sound and usually brilliantly made, yet you have this enormous band of haters who can't afford one.

I do agree that it's a complete nuisance to have to buy a complete new TV set just a couple of years after we were all told we had to have 1080p HD. That part of it is hard to swallow tbh.

Changing a TV format is one of the hardest things to pull off. Literally every one has one.

 

Yup, I think it's also laziness. They resent having to put on a pair of glasses. Often hear them say they won't use 3d until glasses free comes. That is just nonsensical. Ultimately glasses free 3d would be great but it's not a practical reality yet. The current glasses compromise still provide excellent 3d.

Just been looking at amazon for "3d blu ray". I'd forgotten how much there is out there already and that's just the mainstream stuff.

Battle for Terra is a nice 3d animated movie. I try to avoid hollywood animated movies in general. Terra isn't a sugar-coated kiddy musical.

Dirt 3 is great in 3d. I've played it with Track IR 4 and 3d glasses. F1 2011 is also nice with glasses.

Calling 3d a gimmick is just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard and I hear it a lot from haters. Given that most of us are born with 3d vision. Rendering everything in 2d is unnatural. So 3d isn't perfect... what is? Sitting in front of a 2d monitor and playing 3d games is perfect? Just the opposite. It's far from ideal. Something doesn't have to be perfect to be usable.

The problem with 3D right now is the viewing style - it's successful in cinemas because everyone is in a dark room, facing directly forwards and actively concentrating on watching the movie. At home, watching TV is a passive thing - you typically do various things while you watch TV, like surf the net, chat to people, eat dinner or do the ironing. Watching something in 3D means putting on the glasses, which gets in the way of those activities significantly.

The other issues I have that it's uncomfortable to wear the glasses with prescription glasses as they dig in to your face and the refresh rate. At 30Hz effective per eye from a 60Hz refresh rate, I can perceive the flickering from the scan lines too clearly to ignore (Nvidia 120Hz 3D is definitely much better in my experience though).

until you can get 3d without glasses at consumer prices , the uptake will be nerds.

 

Weve got 3D TV in the lounge. We use it very very occasionally, for the odd film here and there. We also used it for NBA (sky coverage) and boxing (boxing and golf are imo the best sports to watch in 3D)

My honest opinion is..... Its ok. Nothing more nothing less. The main downside for me is the reduction in picture quality (may just be our tv?) but watching a 3D blu ray doesnt look as crisp, bright or clear as a standard blu ray.

I also tried gaming on the tv using my pc, but that was very meh. Presumably its better with nvidia 3d vision and monitor.

Im not a 3D hater, i just call is at i see it. Which is...... Its ok.

 

It doesn't bother me that its going. I only watch 3D films at the imax because I find irritating and intrusive on the normal cinema screens but I would generally prefer to have a 2D option for all films. So far, Avatar is the only film where I have really appreciated the depth of 3D and for the rest it has largely been gimmicky with swords coming out of the screen etc.

Sorry for the 'hate' but its just not for me and apparently I am not in the minority.

 

I love watching high budget 3D movies in the cinema. The effect can add so much depth to a scene when used correctly, I saw Avatar in both 3D and 2D, the 3D version was much more impressive in my opinion. Same goes for The Avengers, the recent Man of Steel, The Hobbit and countless other recent films. When things are planned in 3D, it just works, when it's tacked on, well like any tacked on device it becomes a gimmick.

For TV and PC use though, I can't be bothered until we can do away with the glasses. I don't mind in a cinema as my only focus is the movie, I'm also handed a pair of spec as I enter. At home they're just another extension of the TV remote. I just inevitably lose the damn things, I'll put them down on a counter and bam, never seen again. The fact that they're so expensive means this is actually a real issue. Unlike normal glasses that go everywhere with you, these stay at home, which personally I think promotes the ease of misplacement.

It's sad to see the content disappear though. If it's not adopted, who will want to take a punt on the next generation of the technology? It just puts companies off as the end user is now even less likely to take up the idea the next time.
