well, someone stole some macs from a client site. I replaced them, I installed prey on them, a week later (last night) they came and stole another one and I had a call about it at 4am this morning. they have turned it on and now I have a picture of their lounge, I have their ip address, their internet supplier and a rough idea of exactly which street it's on. I hope the next picture that comes through is their nasty face. There is also a nice pile of laptops in their lounge.
Hah, awesome. Did you see a similar thing recently? Someone got their MBP nicked when mugged, and used a similar software pack to take loads of screenshots and publicly embarrass them by posting their address, pictures (and cum face) and their porn preferences on a blog! I'll try and find it, most hilarious.
Yeah I've seen that! The mac just turned off after 90 minutes. I hope power saving. No face pictures have happened, just an empty room - will a pile of laptops, and a couple of time capsules. looks dodgy, but no faces edit: It's on again!
I installed seekdroid and lookout onto my portable devices. I regularly get pics of myself and location sent every time I fail to unlock it lol.
Link please! That sounds great. Also, out of curiosity, any way for these systems to access a GPS module built into the laptops? That would help quite a lot if a PC/laptop went missing and you had ghetto/factory installed GPS.
it's with the police. I do have nice pictures of them now Is not technically mine, it's my clients, so I can't make any decisions, I am merely spectating and collecting information. There is a picture of two blokes and one is in their pants and they are watching something on vevo....
http://plumpergeddon.tumblr.com/page/13 Start at the bottom of that page and reverse-read for chronological correctness. Took a bit to find it, I'm going to catch up on what I've missed over the last couple of months!
Big brother may be watching, but he only pays attention when you break the law.... (or have a cheeky knuckle shuffle.)
the thing that made it so easy was they hooked it up to their wireless, which then did a full traceroute from their connection - prey using the gps in the machine was able to approximate the location (like icloud find my mac) - but with the trace route it and wireless information we had we were able to get their sky account name, which the police used to find their exact address (which was actually the same address that prey was saying). The police also ceased all the other equipment in the lounge, there was a stack of laptops, loads of time machines, couple of macbook pros and airs. The only thing I don't get with prey, is I had set it to lock the screen and have an unlock password. which I know it had displayed as it sends over screenshots of the machine and it was locked - the only time it was unlocked was when I got the picture of the man in his pants and his little sidekick, and they were watching a vevo video logged in as the guest account - so I'm not sure how they got around the prey lock screen. All the same, prey is awesome, get it for 3 devices for free, or to upgrade and get real time response etc. is only 5 bucks a month.
Here is a link to another story about someone reclaiming their mac from a thief. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4oB28ksiIo
Epic win! I must get this on some of my own devices! Not that I've ever had anything stolen, but you never know, it could happen.
I use prey on my stuff, grand little app. Wish they made it for Windows 8 Phone though! I've not checked the youtube video, but is it the one from Defcon (I think) about someones power mac getting nicked, the guy getting back into it remotely and accessing all the thiefs login details for facebook, banks etc?
