I bought a Gigabyte 7790 2Gb GPU but a friend reckons I would have been better off spending the same on a secondhand 7850. I am still within the 7 days to return the 7790 so just wondered if I should return it.

The rest of my spec is AMD 955 BE, ASUS M3N78-VM MB, and 8Gb DDR2 1066 ram. Nothing is overclocked as I don't know how to and prefer the peace and quiet anyway ;)

    how much was it?

new 7850`s are about £110 on special and you can get a 7870LE (7950 light) for under £160

I paid £118 for the 7790 from Amazon. Really? You can get new 7850 2Gbs for £110?

I tend to only buy MSI, Gigabyte or Asus though.

How much better is it though? I am not sure I can bothered with the hassle now.

It's much better. I would send it back that sounds really expensive for a 7790.

Reviews show it to be a lot better. If I were you, I'd get it sent back and get the better card. (I made a similar mistake a couple of years ago with a 6790).

Thanks for all the info then. I am going to get it replaced.

Will 1Gb be enough? I originally went with a 2Gb card as I only had 4Gb memory but I've now added another 4 anyway.

You can get 7790s for £80. They're great cards for the money, but not good next to a 7850.

Do 2GB. Might as well. VRAM usage gets intense quicker nowadays.

AT 1600x1200 (which is actually a surprisingly dense resolution) I hit +1GB of VRAM easily.

Thanks everyone. It is clear that I have made a poor choice when it comes to cost/performance ratio.

By all accounts I should return it but I am leaning towards not bothering. I know it is the wrong choice but I am very busy and I do love that this card is completely silent and uses less power as my PSU is very old. I know 7850s are very quiet too and are not exactly power hungry by any means but I have had so many problems with my PC when changing components in the past that I think I might just live it it.

I've definitely learnt my lesson though and will do more research in the future before purchasing anything. Thanks.

dude! just start the return and order the enw one - you`ll be all sorted in no time!

request a return then wander off to the post office (or collectplus) and send the 7790 off - order the 7850 and voila all good!

Thing is I really want a 2Gb. I haven't got a really good reason for that but I have 2Gb now so want to stick with it. I can't find a 2Gb 7850 for much less than £150 which means finding another £32. Not a huge amount but £118 was already above my original budget.

Thanks though mate. I know you are right.
