hey folks, looking at the GTX 580 it seems a really good price at 137.50 on scan

What does everyone else think? Is this a good buy?

    Upgrading possible from a GTX 285 with a Q6600 oc to 3.2ghz

how much benefit will i see on a 1920x1080 for gaming?
    e.g. Planetside2 / arma2 / arma3 / BF3 etc

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1536...r-1544mhz-512-cores-mhdmi-dual-dvi-oem-brown-

Ive looked on GPU boss but with the games I play I cant see a direct comparison.

    Cheers

If you get a 7870 LE for £25 extra it'll outperform it easily, have more memory, use far less power, and be supported longer. (In other words, no, I wouldn't get one)

I have to disagree, the 7870 LE won't stomp all over it as suggested. They'll trade places as fastest depending on the game being supported longer isn't really a real world issues when you consider that the 7950GX2 I've got in a box is still supported by some fairly recent titles (in fact by one one that's still currently in beta ;) ).

In short: It's a good deal, so is the 7870 LE. Depends on whether you can afford the extra £25.

By supported I don't mean won't run anything at all, rather that Nvidia has absolutely zero interest in the 580 now, while AMD is still actively developing for the 7000 series.

The 7870 LE won't stomp all over the 580, no, but on recent drivers it won't be trading places, it'll be ahead. The regular 7870 would trade places, though.

Given the memory limitations (less than 2GB is seriously a problem for games going forward) and the power use, I wouldn't get the 580.

teppic is right, but it all depends on what OP wants to spend

for that price the 580 is good, at its own price the 7870xt is better, and three titans is better yet

A £25 difference isn't quite three Titans :) Plus you should get some free games with the 7870 LE.

Now that makes the difference. If they're games you have or don't want you can easily get £5-10 a pop on here which could conceivably drop the 7870 price to £15 (best case scenario) less than the 580 and that is a clear no brainer.

Would the 580 make a good upgrade to the 5850?

yes but in my time of owning a 7xxx card i have found them unstable in a number of games, and seems to me the 580 is a more stable card.

Maybe someone should throw up a few links showing these cards being tested with new drivers.

    Thanks for the reply folks

Ive currently been lazy not doing any OT at work so currently cash is strapped to minimum spends possible and saw this little gem on facebook by scan. So just querying vs 285 is it worth the upgrade for the price? :)

£155 for a 580 is not cheap. They sell for £100 used.

    its 137.50

and id rather new than pre-owned for reliability / warranty / not burned out before i use it etc

Also is it going to be worth the upgrade, its not just about the price. I cant seem to find via google or otherwise a direct comparison for the games I play

    My rig:
    Q6600 @ 3.2
    4GB DDR2
    P5Q Asus S775
    650W etasis

Sure they were £155 last week.

Any way I wouldn't buy one. They're old technology and use a fair chunk of power. Personally I would go with one of these.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-...08mhz-gddr5-gpu-1033mhz-boost-1098mhz-cores-9

Which would be pretty close in performance terms, fully retail boxed and uses way less power.

Might not be the optimal experience some games recommend a I5 750 or up now.
