I just cant decide on these gpu's ? any owners or opinions would be helpfull. Gigabyte Windforce 3X Radeon HD 7950 Asus GTX 670 DirectCU II 4gb MSI GeForce GTX 760 Twin Frozr OC there all around my budget ish, im not to fussed about the games, its for a single display at the moment i may get two more screens at some point so im not to sure which one any ideas?
If you are getting more screens at a later point then the 7950 would be ideal as it has more vram and you can overclock it into next year , other than that the 670 would be good especially now as it is having massive price cuts!
How much are you looking at? As you can get a good overclocked 7950 with a decent cooler for £190 at the moment.
How is the cooler on this card? I had the same cooler strapped to a 560Ti 448 and it was the loudest GPU I've ever owned.
Really quiet. It's had superb reviews. Plus OCUK at the moment is giving out both AMD Never Settle deals - Crysis 3 et al as well as the new silver/gold bundle.
I wonder whether the GF110 core was just incredibly hot running (likely as it was Fermi) or maybe there was something wrong with my card...
The last gen weren't at all efficient, but I expect the cooler itself has been revised a lot too. It may be that it had a very aggressive fan profile too. One review of the noise: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_radeon_hd_7950_twin_frozer_iii_review,10.html
I'd go with a 4gb 670 currently on sale for £230 on ocuk. the DCUII coolers are super quiet and the extra vram will help if you get more screens.
that msi 7950 looks great, rev 3 version, but its out of stock till the 30th not surprised, i was looking at a review on hard ocp about the 670 4gb which started of really good but seemed to go down hill with regards to the extra mem, so i dont know about that now. cpc seemed to love the msi 760 with big oc etc, so its hard trying to get the best bang for buck, im thinking of waiting a bit longer and see what happens with stock and prices. thanks
I had the standard 560ti with a twin frozr and it was quiet as a mouse (in fact my sons is still using it), I did use MSI afterburner with a custom fan profile though as the the cards own profile was too aggressive. My card never went past about 62c with 55% fan.
The 760 is the weakest card of the three. It's a cut down 670 with a new name. The 670 4GB has no improvement in memory bandwidth, which is just as important as capacity. The 7950 has 3GB/384bit, which is the memory spec you have to go to the GTX 780 to get with nvidia.
I agree with this, keep an eye on the OCuk deals as they seem to constantly have cheap 670/680 cards atm.
It's perfectly fine up to 50%. After that it makes the most annoying ferking whirring sound I've ever heard. I had a 6970 Lightning and even though it isn't what I would call noisy (like high noise levels) the noise it does make is like that bit in Dumb and Dumber....
a 670 is faster than a 760 at stock to start with and I expect you could coax more performance out of the 670 just by overclocking the memory to nearly 7GHz and pushing the power envelope to 122% which by my calculations just draws 170W like the Nvidia recommendations allow. Not sure how much you could push out of a 760 though.
the latest custom pc mag has a round up of 760's and they got the msi twin frozr up to 1170 base clock boosting to 1293 and mem 1950 [7.8ghz] they reckon it was getting close to 770 performance. ive never had this much trouble choosing a card before ha ha.
