Best I could tell it was rather solid and sealed - no hinges or moving bits in sight. Why somebody would not want their front door usable I just do not know!

Weird. Maybe they needed an extra bedroom and converted the front entry?

Because if they had any more, they'd become long-drawn-out rambling crap like Lost or Heroes.

1.44MB*408=587.52MB. Considering that my brother's 7 disk is on DVD, it has to be bigger than 700MB. So, I show you this instead:

Well my Windows 7 Disk is 3.01GB... formatted capacity of a 3.5" [dual-sided] floppy was 1.38MB... meaning you'd need in region of 2200 floppies...

Windows 8 [based on 2.63GB ISO], would need a mere 1800 or so...

Maybe it's an elaborate practical joke. The guy's going to wait until everybody is asleep that night, and then shout: "FIRE!!!" :p

And this is why every priest, minister or nun needs to have training in mental health issues. Otherwise it's a disaster waiting to happen.

The original sash windows in my flat have been converted to double glazing by just sticking another set of windows on the inside. Trouble is, they only bothered to put one set of opening windows in my room, the other two are a single sheet of glass covering the whole (1 by 2.5 m) window, so I can't open the sash windows behind.

That's the most half-assed thing I've heard for a while^, terrible idea. Guessing they did it because the sash windows are listed as a feature of the building and can't be replaced with more modern windows, so just stick some new pvc windows on the inside

If you can, pop out the beading, and remove the window pane ( carefully )- no one will notice from the outside and you can open the window again :D

It's generally called secondary glazing, and if you're in a listed building or a conservation area, it's generally the norm to bring it up to spec - opening ones are considerably more expensive than fixed, so (in a nutshell) there's the reason. The only other option is SlimLiteGlass who have apparently patented thin glass... Now that's demotivating!
