I wonder if my recent crashes have had anything to do with this. All of a sudden started getting random BSODs stating uncorrectable hardware error.
Only had three in the last week, but that's three more than I should have had.

That would explain the failed updates I've had on a new students laptop.

Bloody embarrassing having it system restore every time he tries to install updates.

I've had to turn auto-updates off for the time being.

MS Just can't get a break. But then again they are supporting and patching literally dozens of different windows versions at the same time. They're in a right pickle, but purely of their own making. What do they do to resolve the issue?

    1. Release windows 8 that a lot of people felt they didn't need or want.
    2. Produce two fundamentally different versions of windows 8.
    3. Go with a third OS for mobile devices.

So rather than simplify things they've complicated them again. Opportunity lost.

For those of you experiencing repeat Microsoft update downloads on KB0588, 0583 and 0411 as I have done be aware that posts all over the world are complaining about this. I have gone allowed the download twice then hidden it in the log by right clicking on the duplicate downloads. That removes it from the download schedule and you still have the original downloa.

So fa I have not seen any response from Microsoft to fix the problem which must be worrying a lot of people who don't understand what is happening

I built my folks a new PC there (using my old parts) last week with a clean install of Windows 7 and it won't boot now. Something about "Hardware has changed", don't know if its related. I'm going to go down and look at it today.

    My PC is running fine.

KB2810009 keeps failing to install, supposedly an Access 2013 patch, but only got Word and Excel installed by custom installation. Had to hide the update for now to stop the notifications.

So that's what it was, on the PC where all the updates installed first time on the Tuesday (an immediate sign of a problem  ), the repeats seem to be over - for now. I'll do the update hiding on the other one and see if that sorts it out.

Best thing to do IMHO is turn off automatic updates, as since they changed to only releasing patches on the second Tuesday of every month its pointless having it check every day.
Then wait to see if there are any issues before running Windows update manually, until Microsoft get there act sorted out with this new faster release cycle.

Patch Tuesday isn't new - Microsoft's been storing updates for the second Tuesday of the month for years. Since 2003, in fact. If it hasn't got used to it now, a decade on, what makes you think another few years will make any difference?

Well i cant say for certain they will sort it out, i was trying to be unbiased ;)

And yes patch Tue has been around for years, but these problems seem to have become more frequent since they decided on this new faster release cycle. TBH IDK why Microsoft still set Windows update to check daily when as you said patch Tue has been going for years.

To be fair, Windows 8 and RT are essentially the same thing. Windows 8 is also a necessary release, and arguably late in the game. WP8 is different for the same reason that iOS is different from OSX.

What Microsoft could do is what Apple does: stop supporting older versions of the OS as soon as the new one comes out. See many patches for OSX Cheetah? But Microsoft is still expected to support Windows XP. People hold Microsoft to a higher standard, and sometimes I wonder if that standard is set unreasonably high.

Cutting support for older version would be a big no-no for the corporate environment. This is probably one of the reasons why Apple struggles to gain ground (outside of the consumer market), in the corporate environment they need time to test updates/changes, and like to keep the status quo.

Yes, I must be paranoid! I think M$ is doing this on purpose to get us to downgrade to 8. I don't think I'm nuts, but this is just a thought. The way they have been behaving lately, I wouldn't be surprised.

Because other things [MSE being the main thing that springs to mind] are updated more frequently, there's also no set schedule for was/when [or indeed if] driver updates get pushed to WU/MU

It didn't occur to me that other things get updated outside of this time frame :duh:
But afaik MSE sets up a scheduled task to update def's every hour. And even though i have never trusted drivers from WU, i guess this is how a lot of people update their drivers :eyebrow:

16 pending updates, 9 of them for three different versions of MS Office, which I don't run. Oh well, turning them all off for now. Microsoft needs to get their crap together.
