Ok so I went for the following build which should arrive the next couple of days:

Graphic Card MSI GeForce GTX 770 OC - 2 Go (N770 TF 2GD5/OC)
    Case Fractal Design Define R4
    CPU 3.4GHz Intel Core i5-4670K
    Motherboard MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
    Screen BenQ XL2411T
    PSU Seasonic X-750 (SS-750KM3) 80PLUS Gold
Ram Corsair Vengeance Low Profile CML8GX3M2A1600C9G
    Storage: HDD Spinpoint 1tb 3gb/s

I could not stretch my budget any further and I wanted to really take each component I have picked so I decided to use the stock i5-4670K cpu cooler for starters until I can afford an aftermarket cooler.

I know every chip is different, but has anyone tried overclocking an i5-4670K with the stock cooler, and if so to what frequency ?

Also I have not OCed in a while so what settings did you guys use ?

    Thanks !

Overclocking Haswell on a stock cooler?

In all seriousness, I don't think you'll achieve much in the way of an overclock with intel's stock HSF. You can't really use other people's settings either as every chip/board combo gives different results and no two processors are alike either. If you want to OC, wait until you get a decent cooler first and then find your own max overclock by following a decent guide.

Not fobbing you off but you'll get the best results and temps if you do it this way bud.

It's not even a joke, don't joke about that :D

But seriously, Haswell chips run incredibly hot compared to the last few generations. OC on a stock cooler and it will hit the TJ max very quickly. Your shiny, powerful £170 processor will literally cook itself. Do not OC until you can afford some sort of aftermarket cooler. Even a £20 Gelid Tranquillo will be better than that pile of **** on there at the moment.

I really wouldn't bother Link. Worth waiting for a decent cooler and then explore the chips limits after you can manage the heat. Even expensive coolers struggle with some Haswell chips...

You probably couldn't even get it up to 4Ghz without it throttling.

No way, not with Haswell. You're obviously keen to overclock it, so go get some money together and buy a Corsair H80i.

Wise choice, Link. They're very hot. My 4770K runs at 70c ish at stock but at 4.5GHz, it quickly rises to 85 - 90c with a Silver Arrow SB-E. They're disappointing in that respect.

My first one (sent back due to this issue) ran at 80 to 85c at stock under the SB-E. Completely unacceptable in my eyes.

Sounds fine. You'll find as soon as you up the voltage to get a stable overclock your computer will impersonate the sun.

    55c at idle?

Holy guacamole man. My AMD loads at those temps. Any more and it becomes unstable :hehe:
