The new Haswell-equipped NUCs should hit the shelves within the next weeks.

As you can see at a glimpse, the called for SATA-port is now implemented and there'll be an HD5000-IGP aswell. For the HTPC-usability there's also an infrared sensor thrown into the mix.

Too bad that frequencies are down to 1.3 / 2.6 (instead of 1.8/2.8) in order to fit the HD5000. It's 500MHz less without turbo (-28%). Guess it'll rapidely turbo.

Back on the current i5 NUC, I'd be currious to know if it can run the latest Terraria (1.2) @1080p. Anyone know ?

Think of a teeny tiny HTPC-box with a 1TB 2.5" HDD for mediafiles and an integrated infrared sensor for the remote. In addition to the mSATA for a fast responsive OS, the WiFi and four USB 3.0 ports.

Or think of a teeny tiny workstation in a 11cm cube, which gives enough room to slap a 92mm cooler onto the board, so it's no problem if the system runs on turbo-mode the whole time :)

Is it just the single USB3 port?

Yes just the single one - no header. Cases like the Akasa Newton V have a male to female cable for it.

These (or more appropriately the Haswell one) are pretty good for what we use them for at my Uni. We've got around 5 60" plasma displays that are on wheels so we can move them around and these are pretty good stuck on the back of them so they always go out with a PC.

Makes it far easier to use that faffing around hooking up a laptop to it.

I look at these as a router box, I wouldn't use one for media of any kind. Need something with more beef!

A Core i5 is fast enough to play 1080p videos? How much beef do you need? A whole cow's worth?

Sometime within the next two month, if there's no delay.
