I just downloaded this earlier to install this weekend, should I just get W8 instead?

Currently on W7 but I thought I'd give the new one a try.

Downloading from the Windows store now.

Is this update redistributable, or am I going to have to download separately for each system in the house?

A smooth and effective update: the only things that changed were the actual updates (duh), my custom font size, Firefox replaced by IE11 and my libraries disappeared.

    Wait, what?

Actually, they're not gone, but MS has now decided they're not important any more. So they're not visible by default in File Explorer, and when you do unhide them, they're right down at the bottom (and you can't move them up in the order). :duh:

So they're only editable via the registry. Handy :duh:
Shame. I actually quite quite like the feature, but half the default folders I don't use at all and I can't add the folders I use most.

I get Microsoft simplifying things by removing some customisations, but in this case pretty much everything similar in "This PC" is customisable... Apart from the folders.
I can customise drives and network locations, but I can't easily remove the "Pictures" folder and add my own "Software" folder. Seems silly to me.

    --------------------------------

Also, my desktop has gained a "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly" watermark.

I think can see what the problem is (secureboot isn't enabled in the bios), but I can't do anything about it as I need to be in user mode according to the MSI bios (as far as I can tell this means "prior to Windows installation") to change the setting.
I've tried this: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/20256-uefi-firmware-settings-boot-inside-windows-8-a.html and it doesn't help.

I guess it should have been enabled prior to installing Win 8, but the fact there was no warning then and there is now has wrong footed me somewhat.

Any ideas on how to enable it?

I've been up and running on it for a few hours.

2 problems I have had but fixed.

Asus AI Suite has drivers that it installed for USB3 extra power out. However these drivers were broken for windows 8.1 for me so I had to uninstall AI Suite.

Graphics driver needed an update (League of Legends went a bit haywire)

I find This PC tweaker to be pretty handy. It lets you add or remove just about anything there.

Well, after a refresh, the 66 updates a bare 8 install needed... and *finally* the 8.1 install is done... i have a feeling i know what the update took exception to [Sound card drivers] but it's done with...

Because it is a Windows upgrade, not an update. Not all Windows upgrades will be free; some will be bought, so they need the store infrastructure to manage the transaction. Updates are always free so go through the usual maintenance channel.

If you own Windows 8: nothing. It's a free upgrade. If you own Windows 7 or below, same price as Windows 8.

I'd like to know this as well. When it comes to reinstalling I'd rather not have to do windows 8 then an 8.1 upgrade.

    Easy fix for this.

Search for "netplwiz" on the start screen and run the utility.
Select the account you wish to automatically logon without entering a password.
Select "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer"
User accounts will then grey out.
    Click on Apply
Ignore the username, mine just shows "Richard", must be an internal account name.
Enter your password twice as requested.
    Click OK.

Next time you restart windows will automatically log you onto your Microsoft account.
