Does mantle work on all the AMD range or just the new R9 cards?

Mantle will work with all GCN cards if you have an up to date driver.

Assumption is 7 series and above, till AMD confirms this its just guess work though. But not all 7 series Gpu are gcn. 7950 and above will likely be fine. Everything below and I'd have my douts.

The two should really be bought hand in hand. No point in buying a better monitor on its own because your GPU will struggle, no point in buying a new GPU on its own because its total overkill. Or at least that's how I reasoned it.

I was thinking I would get the card 1st and maybe the monitor afterwards... I like to play with all the eye candy on... even at 1680x1050 :D

Its all down to budget. Dependant on what you are currently gaming at resolution wise. 1080p I hope.

Regretting my 670 sidegrade earlier in the year. Though I think it will suit my needs for awhile.

I upgraded from the Samsung 2232bw to a Dell U2412M earlier this year and the difference between the two screens is absolutely incredible - the Dell utterly wipes the floor with the Samsung.

In my opinion, you'd be better off upgrading just your monitor rather than just your GPU - your current card is still really capable, and it's just overkill going for a better GPU at 1680 x 1050.

Thought I'd answer that - the U2412M is 1920x1200 which is actually slightly higher resolution than "Full HD" which is 1920x1080 (the 1080 bit is where 1080p comes from in TV shops etc). Apart from the higher resolution, the main difference between the two monitors is that the Samsung uses a TN panel and the Dell uses an IPS panel (different technologies) and so the Dell will have better colours and viewing angles etc.

290x too hot and loud, 7990 cheap but ive read they suffer from coil whine, 7970 or 280x crossfire would be my choice, i have 2 7970's and thinking about changing to 280's because my 70's have reference coolers, proberly a bit silly i know but what can you do when you get these ideas in your head
