    105°C.

I don't suppose you guys measured the exhaust temperatures did you? I'd be curious to know if this would damage any cabling, panelling, or anything else if it's that hot. On the plus side, if I ever got one I have an RV02 so the GPU exhausts straight up, it'd heat my desk up and keep my tea warm....

OMG ... I'm tired today :wallbash: ... 105°C with 100% fan and uncovered is way too much. How can this happen ? 780 maxed at 82°C with 70% fan ... COVERED !

But we write for our audience.

I can see that you might build a SFF HTPC system in a really compact case but then you encounter too many variables: Would you use a high-end Haswell or a Core i3? Do you use a large SFF case like a Prodigy or something really compact.

Oh lordy, basic maths fail. They should all be 69C - the GPU was at 95C.

The exhaust temp isn't too bad - it's hair dryer used at normal distance hot. I suppose you'd want to keep it some distance from anything that could be damaged, though the same could be said of any GPU exhaust.

The card only targets 95°C by default. If you decrease this target temperature, it will prioritise increasing fan speeds to reduce the temperature to the specified target. However, you can also set a max fan speed, so if the card also reaches this max fan speed and still overheats, clock speeds will then drop. All three variables (max clock speed, max fan speed, target temp) are related. Power limit is the fourth variable but less relevant as most people are unlikely to self-throttle themselves by reducing this.

So, for example, you might want to run at say 85°C. On the reference card, it may be necessary to increase max fan speeds to 60-70% in order to run at this temperature and at max clock speeds. Therefore, aftermarket coolers that potentially introduce faster and superior heat transfer and high airflow/low noise fans could, potentially, allow you to run at 85°C with fans at 30-40%.

Just to be clear, the fan isn't running at 100%, it is allowed to run at up to 100%. It was generally hitting about 70% as well, but creating more noise in the process.

that's why I used a ":D" ... but it always kind of irritate me when someone says "Who use that or this nowaday ?". It's like pushing someone aside because he/she doesn't have an iphone / smarphone, tv, 4X4, etc...

I often hear seller "Everybody as a smarphone with tethering now", "What ! You do not have a TV ?" ... sorry for the little "off-topic", but you shouldn't make such assumptions

    EDIT :

Good to know. Hope time will prove I'm wrong, but I'm still skeptical about this GPU. This "Max temp setting" look more like a keeper to prevent the GPU from heating even more.

as said above - quite a lot of people actually, s its supposed to be `adequate`.

many people on the forum have i7 itx builds purely for HTPC , so not onluy have top end , but also use the iGPU as well

Anandtechs prove it was for stock clocks, Start overclocking it and it will collapse but thats beside the point really. Stock cooler uber mode exists on this amd card. Is a covered case really that rare, Even big tower cases will have the side panels that are solid.

Even in my own case nzxt phantom has only 2 fans on the side pannel the rest is pretty solid blocks of metal. I have personally modded it to fit water cooling stuff around and outside of it but thats not really relivent.

Personally do not like the fact that it lost 500 points in a covered scenario, Guess we wait to see what aftermarket coolers do.

Anyone else think 28nm is on its last legs though.

that does remind me - TSMC are buying up as much capability as they can afford for t he change to20nm ; but , haven't heard anything from GloFo (and do UMC even want to play this game anymore?)

I totally didn't check the maths 4 times with a calculator, honest. :worried:

Yea not sure i'd want a hair dryer level of heat that close to me tbh. Hopefully the 290 will be a bit better. I assume the 40% fan covered scenario is below what should be 'stock'. It'd be great to know the clocks at each fan setting, but that'd be nigh impossible I'd imagine.

    Going by this card, definitely.

OCUK has a nice waterblock version of the card, and the card is compatible with the standard Accelero Artic closed loop water also. (no need for the specialised one for 7970/7950).

And don not forget this is reference cooler design. When ASUS, Sapphire etc put their 2-3 fan cooling solutions on them, with PCB changes, things will be better. :)

In the mean time most lost the forest and look at the tree. The card is cheaper & faster than the GTX780, and anyone who gets such card isn't going to cramp it in a ITX case.

Your question is not simple to answer, because 290X drops performance over time, because the cooling is not good enough for the required any of the 800/1000MHz settings : http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/R9_290X/30.html

40% setting drops down to 700Mhz area with short drops to 570Mhz area; 55% setting drops down to 800Mhz with short drops to 600Mhz area.

@Panos: That "ITX case" has better cooling than most of your ATX cases.

not anymore ... as expected, the GTX780 price dropped ! Now retails @469€ vs 489€ for the R290X

And people are using Titan in ITX rig (ex: EVGA HADRON) without any issue ...

Hexus are reporting the R290 will be $100 LESS than the 290X and within 10% of its performance!

The itx case in question is one of the most popular cases. For a LAN rig why would you not stick this card in a itx case.

It sounds like AMD cut corners with the cooler to try and keep the cost of the card as low as possible.

I think this card in a decent dedicated loop will be a very exciting prospect, as long as people don't mind ludicrously high power consumption!

The heat it would put into a loop would be more a worry than power consumption from my point of view. As even though your water cooling that heat is still exausted to where your sitting through the rads, In the summer a hot running card even if its colder under water is still a hot running card when it leaves your pc.

During the summer even with dedicated loops I remove overclocks to stop me melting next to my PC or leaving it in a bucket of sweat after a few hrs of gaming. Water cooling does not mythically remove the heat that the card generates it just reduces the temperature that it is running under.

People who ran sli 480s can attest to this.

Another cooling solution could be a thick passive grill ... then you can transfer the heat to your sausage, eggs or muffin. Saves space and cook your breakfast aswell :D * OK I leave *
