AMD have said they wont be making any hardware themselves its just a prototype for the new APU.....

I think you mean it offers a 39% improvement.

0% improvement means it's no better.
100% improvement means it's twice as good.
    139% means it's 2.39 times as good.

Shame. The images look good and I see no reason why they shouldn't lead from the front with their own technology.

And surely it's not a prototype if they're not going to build the darn things. Maybe you mean concept device? Or reference design if you want to push the definitions.

Nope, 139% is what AMD is claiming.

Only if you choose to define prototype in a very restrictive manner. While, yes, a reference design would perhaps be a more accurate summation, it is still a first attempt, a proof of concept for the industry.

It is a 139% better performance per watt, based on TDP of the chips and performance improvement. Which is a little specious, since actual power consumption underwork load for Temash versus Mullins at which the performance is obtained is not specified nor is the measurement at that.

A lower TDP doesn't necessarily mean a lower SDP.

Anandtech does have the break down in performance increase and it is roughly in the 30% range for increased CPU performance and 20% for increased GPU performance of Mullins versus Temash.

AMD is also claiming around a 2x increase in performance per watt.

By comparison Bay Trail scores about 65% of what Temash does in 3dmark11 (or about half of Mullins), but about double what Temash can manage in PCmark. Which makes Bay Trail more than 50% faster on the CPU end than Mullins. GPU lags a lot, but the CPU is still way ahead.

In normal use, the CPU being so weak is what you are much, much more likely to notice at the performance levels we are talking about.

Also Cherry Trail, Bay Trails replacement, which will be coming out roughly in the same time frame as Mullins, so looking likely to have roughly a 50-100% increase in GPU performance over Bay Trail...which means that Cherry Trail is likely to have a MASSIVE CPU performance lead and probably be somewhere between 80-120% of the performance of Mullins in the GPU department.

Probably also while consuming less power.

If Mullins was here TODAY, it might make an interesting comparison to Bay Trail. It will be going up against Cherry Trail though (in all likelihood).

Once anyone other than Intel uses SDP, that's when I'll start to care.

Outside of synthetic benchmarks I am weary of comments where the cpu is slow etc.....

Compared to it's peers that may be the case, compared to the programs it has to run smoothly, if it's capable of doing that, I don't see this being a reason not to buy. Having more GPU grunt and tying some of that parallelism into a shared CPU resource, assuming the code is written correctly, then it could even be better in certain situations.

I am more concerned of the crappy codenames for these products Cherry Trail and Mullins, sounds more like a new TV series than an exciting new chapter in mobile computing.

Could be another nvidia shield style thing.

Competing with Microsoft for 3rd place in tablet market sounds like a recipe for disaster though.

    Gl to them.

AMD is now using SDP, apparently.
