Case Mod - In Progress ZdMods | Project 720 | Started on the top - Oct 17

I'm still working on the midplates, but with a 40hour job and an almost 2 year old I don't have as much time for the build as I would like..

I've made a small photo setup, still not perfect, but it gives way better pictures than before. Next big update will have all pics taken like this;



Last night I had some time to work on the plates, decided to redo the spacers between the plates. Now the are made from brass instead of aluminium and all are filed to exactly 20mm so the plates are all level. I've also used countersunk screws on both ends for a much cleaner look.

Almost done, 3 holes, 2 spacers left

 

Very impressive as always! A true master of aluminum!

so yeah about time for an update!

First up, the reservoir I'm going to use, a big fat Aqualis 880ml Gotit 2nd hand, but it looks brand new

The box is a bit damaged


But the reservoir is in perfect condition and looks awesome




From Coolermaster Benelux I got a set of white Jetflo 120 fans, 7 in total, thanks Ruben, you rock!






The sticker on the fanhub was replaced by a custom ZdMods logo made by plakjesuf


Then the midplates, the part that was most time consuming so far. Did quite alot of filing to get all the plates to the right size. The 2 plates on top need some additional work so I can fit the mobo and mobotray, but thats for later. The plates are connected with countersunk sleevenuts with a brass 20mm tube around them.










To support the midplates I cut a couple of 20x20mm alu corners and attached them to the front and back of the case

Basically the best Dell XPS I have seen brother! Keep it up! The aluminum work is fantastic hand crafted artwork! I love all your builds so far, always something new and unique to keep people on their toes and guessing whats next!! I have a 400ml Aqualis sitting around from my first build, I need to use it already , its such a nice reservoir, I keep wanting to make handmade reservoirs now that I know I can lol! I actually wanted the 880ml one you have here but couldn't find it when I was building my first water loop so I got the 440 nano-coated one. Great products anyhow! Oh yeah congrats on the cooler master fans, is that a sponsor for the build now? Anyhow, can't wait to see more updates on this!!

Thanks man I try to always find an original approach with each case, looks like I found it for this one too, I got some idea's for the mobotray and wiring too, so I hope its going to be even better. I love the reservoir, it really is beautifull, can't wait to see it in the case filled with fluid and the leds on. And no, got the fans for a review.

Will you paint the case of maybe poslish it shiney inside and out?
I'd love to see the inside shiney silver so all those layers and front and backside will reflect the shapes and light.

Not sure on the finish yet, polishing would be cool, but that requires the surfaces to be in perfect condition, as scratches and other damage would really show. Painting gives me a bit more options on the finish, and I can fix the small damaged spots and once painted they won't be visible anymore.

Not much updates lately, busy collecting parts and materials for the case. Ordered the aluminium plates for a mobotray and bottom plate last friday, they should arrive somewhere this week.

And I've bought a mobo, an Asus Maximus VI Formula;







More when I got the aluminium

 

Update time!

Made a mobotray from a 3mm aluminium plate (32x49cm) and installed the standoffs for the mobo. Decided not to use a rear i/o bracket, but instead installed the i/o panel right into the backside of the case;







I've cut almost half of the mobotray away to get a more open feel/look






The mobotray is held in place by small aluminium corners, on this picture the first two are done


And here the third is done too (The small corner on the top right)


Installed some parts to get an idea of the look, hmm not too bad at all


The 5h plate is measured and filed so it wraps around the mobo


Hard to see, but the double bottom is also installed, under the white plate on the bottom there is 15mm space to hide cables


That's it for now..

 

Refreshing to see some nice, healthy progress on this. It's turning out really well, too!

 

Money can buy expensive parts, but not great aesthetic sense.

I love the contrast of linears and curvilinears! These highlights are well balanced, and just right.
