Consider poor me, I'm rubbish at RTS games - I get whacked. I mainly blame this on never playing against humans until PA, unlike FPS games which I've played online since Unreal Tournament.
Wargame is brutal, even on single player. There's some I literally can't get past, despite multiple attempts and different strategies. PA isn't going to play well on a HD4000 unfortunately. They've invested too much in making it look decent. I'm certainly not a slideshow, but that's with a GTX780 in tow.
Spam build units and builders is one way to start. Getting a lot of basic units and defences will help. 10-20 tier 1 anti aircraft can stop any airwave the enemy will send early.
It's been months since I've dabbled with any of my kickstarter games, PA being no exception. Once the unit count goes through the roof, it's hardly surprising if it crawls though, even TA slowed down like mad!
Rest of the system is up to scratch (E3-1245v2, 32GB memory, SSDs throughout), I just don't use it for games, so no graphics. It's a semi-proprietary form factor which makes an upgrade fairly convoluted and costly, and I've had no especially compelling reasons to yet (GA launch of PA being the impending one). Addition of any graphics is either limited to a supported Quadro card as a drop-in (£2000 for the K5000... er, no) or an unsupported MXM 3.0b card that should technically work plus the proprietary cooler (another £100). ... how about GTX770M @2560x1440?
The 770M would be a step up from a HD4000, but if I'm doing my assumptions right, it's equivalent to a GTX 660? I'd be okay running 1080p on that, but at 1440p you're going to have to cut a few things. However, I do find RTS games are less fussy about FPS.
Just downloaded this so I will be playing a couple of games vs the AI in the next couple of days before I even think of venturing out into the world of multiplayer, especially as most of you guys have been playing since the Alpha and know the game inside and out
I've only racked up about 10 hours in the game in total since the alpha! Too many titles to play, too little time.
I picked this up today. It seemed rude not to at just under £20. Although I'm mainly a singleplayer player, I like to think that this game is worth supporting. Hopefully it'll be the kind of game I can play a match against the AI every now and again, like I do with Homeworld 2 or Supreme Commander.
On my lawd the UI is horrible on this game. Everything is too small and why can't I align the camera with the planets poles? It can be very disorienting when moving around. Game is good though, plays very similarly to supcom:FA so that's a good thing.
That helps, ta. Would be nice if the UI could have a button to do that though. I'm a massive fan of WASD to move the camera around nowadays, I'm surprised more games haven't done that.
Roughly equivalent to the GTX660. Stepping up from there incurs a fair old price hike: 770m ~£220 680m ~£370 780m ~£470 Bearing in mind there's a £100 cooler on top of it to consider. Might have to wait until the seemingly imminent 8XXm launch either to pick up an 870m for give-or-take 770m money or to drive down 680m prices to more palatable levels. 680m has the added benefit of knowing that it's compatible, whereas I'm only assuming that the others would be.
Is there much difference between the 770M and the 680M? In the desktop world those two are basically identical.
Watched that one when I had a quick look to check prices last post. Slightly apprehensive though, as it's located in Hungary and from an individual as a one-off. Worth a punt if it ends up staying cheap though. There's a fair bit of difference, mobile GPUs seem to follow entirely different naming rules to their desktop counterparts. 770m is 960@811MHz 680m is 1344@720MHz - seems to be around 20-25% in favour of the 680m in games.
Chaps, a bit of help if I may. I've installed it but I click 'play' and nothing happens - it just goes to a blank screen (still ingame, just no lobbies showing up or anything). I've had a play with the system maker tool - very cool!
