I just bought the Radeon 8990. I'm gonna have one of my coining friends try the card out to see how well it mines, since it destroys the 7990. http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-8990-vs-Radeon-HD-7990 He said that the card's have to be already in the coining system so they know the profile for it, and the 8990 isn't. What's he talking about?
The clock setting need to be tweaked for the best output. The profiles are just existing settings that have been found to work well with a card.
8990? I've never heard of that before but sure. I'm guessing it's the same as a 7990 under the hood so that's easy enough to program. One word of advice, make sure your fan is at 100% constantly. Seriously. I'd highly recommend loading it under Furmark with maximum settings for a bit first to find out maximum temperatures. Those are hot running cards. Can you confirm if it has the same amount of shaders as a 7990? If it is, it's really simple to figure out what's best for it. If you need a hand with creating a batch file, shoot me a PM. I'll help you. Also, try overclocking it. I overclocked my 5850s from 765MHz to 925MHz and the KH/s went up by 30%.
Depends if you want to ruin it within a month, personally I would see what it can comfortably run at whilst keeping decent temps. 100% fan speed will burn the motor out quick quickly, 75-80 will likely suffice.
I think they're okay to last a bit longer than a month. I've had a few HD 5850s running at 100% load for at least three months with 100% fan speeds. They're still absolutely fine. Either way, the card could run cool for all we know. Just let us know how you get on!
i wouldnt bother as litecoin difficulty has gone up 100% in the last month and it isnt worth it anymore, IMO BTW a HD8990 is just a rebranded 7990, clocks at 1000/1500 will yield good results thats what mine are running and you should be about to drop the vcore to 1.1v or so, 1.2v is stock. and it will get HOT
Well it's had no impact on mining if it has at least from my end, I'm still getting the same hash rates I was before on the 290x Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
You will still get the same hash rates, just not the same payout. Kirk is right, it has almost gone up that much. It was at 3000 not too long ago and now hovers between 5400 and 5800.
To be honest, I dabbled for a day or two and then decided that I couldn't be bothered, particularly to increasing difficulty and decreasing US$/LTC exchange rate.
That's why I am getting rid of my set up. I only had 2200KH/s but I was seeing a £1 (ish) return per 24 hours after electricity was paid for. No thanks. I'd rather sell up and cut my losses. LOL.

It's now at a point, as I see it, where the actual costs of procuring hardware and powering it make it unprofitable. However - if you want to do it for fun, go for it!
If you intend to do it for a long time, it may end up being worth it if you hold on to the coins and play the waiting game whilst hoping that the coin you're mining goes up in value. There are obviously other alternatives to buying GPUs, such as ASIC scrypt (for LTC etc.) miners which produce tenfold the amount of power than a GPU could and use far less wattage too. They produce (at the moment) around 2 LTC a day and only use 160w/h to do it. They;re still in the design process though and will cost around £1200 to purchase (expected). It would cost 50p (ish) to run and it will give you roughly £16 to £20 worths of LTC back per day.

It would pull what a 1GHz 7990 would pull. There's no point blasting it and then stopping after two minutes. With it's slight OC, it you're probably looking at 1400-1425KH/s.
