Yeah I was quite taken aback by the cost, but it made more sense the more I looked into it. I had no idea that to plate steel, after cleaning it needed to be plated with copper, then nickel and then finally gold. Aluminium's even worse as the oxide layer first needs to be removed, then needs to be submerged in various solutions that help the electroplating process. Didn't help then having three different metals all at once.

    UPDATE TIME!

Hello once again, I come bearing great news in the form of gold plating! So I received the pieces back from the electroplaters today, must admit I'm mighty impressed. The pieces look really great and match up with the motherboard perfectly, they're also markedly similar to the concept renders, which I didn't expect to be honest. Here are some pics:

Hope you all enjoy the upcoming updates. I'll be working on the cables again over the next week. Stay tuned!

What a mod! This looks incredible. Definitely the best of the black/gold colour scheme builds I have seen so far.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the kind words, I'll be sure to make certain that the build lives up to expectations  :worried:

@Jeffinslaw: That sounds like a great plan. Dominator plats just look so good with almost any finish, heck I did a few quick mockups a while back for a Corsair AMA, I swear these kits would sell like hotcakes.

Red an blue ones seem a tad bit... Tacky, I wanna say? I more prefer the simple elegance of the first three.

It is all about the details. And these are some very nice details. The finish on those items is amazing. Good stuff!

Whilst I definitely prefer the first three too, I think in the right scenario the last two could also work. Remember that they would have a very solid, metallic look to them, which frankly isn't offered by any other RAM on the market right now. Still, it's a moot point anyway, although I'm leaving the possibility open in the future.

Cheers man! Yeah I was very pleased with the finish, I was quite worried they might come back and be too much, too gold. I'm still curious what a bullion-esque heatspreader would look like though in person. I did contemplate polishing them up, but decided it wouldn't fit the other components.

Glad you left it unpolished before plating as it fits perfect the way it is now.
    Great job dude looks amazing.

They are perfect as they are :). Looks like the "champagne" colour often use for high-end audio stuff.

I love the new gold theme from Asus but bought a Gryphon instead only because it's impossible to buy suitable ram / GPU. Great work mate !

Thanks Derick, just noticed that you popped the pics up on the EKWB FB page too

Yeah it definitely was a good idea to keep them stock in this case, although you did show how the polished look also works with your pi mod.

It's a bit of a shame that gold is so laborious to match up really. There are very few decent options out there, which is surprising. You'd think since Asus pushed the gold hard on the mobo front, they'd have also done some matching GPU coolers etc. to help get the ball rolling. The Gryphon's a great board, I love the options you get with the optional armour kit, allows it to fit any theme you want pretty much.

True, the only matching GPU I found is the GTX770 from EVGA, which comes in black with gold inserts

I agree, especially with 6 PWM fan headers and 3 thermal sensor headers. Thinking about using them to control radiator fans depending on water temperature in different point of the loop (when I'll watercool the rig).

That sounds really awesome, just need to hope that the Asus fan control is up to snuff. I'm using it to control the fans in this build too, getting a little bit worried from the things I've heard.

Not exactly a major update or sorts, but I decided to pick up a quick and simple PSU tester. From what I've heard this one's nice and simple and does what it says on the tin. Whilst I probably don't really need it, I'm certain that it was some dodgy wiring on my part that killed one of my SSDs last year, would rather not risk it this time round.

What's wrong with Asus fan control ? Haven't heard anything about it, but haven't search either :worried:. I'll be replacing Windows with Archlinux in the next weeks, so The Asus software won't be of any use for me.

Nice, I should get one too. Thank you for the advise.

Right well I believe it's about time for...

    AN UPDATE!

Sorry for taking to long with this one. To cut a long story short, I was on holiday for the last week of July and the first few days of August. However, as soon I planted my feet on UK soil, I started working on the final part that needed to be laser cut. I was originally going to go with aluminium here and paint it, but in some inspirational haze I realised that it would be much better if instead I went with matte black acrylic. Needless to say, I'm glad I went that route. It really does look fantastic in person, I'll have to see if I can nab some better pictures later on.

You're right, they would, but as said by Siliconfanatic below, I prefer the first three, the GOLD and the BLACK, especially the BLACK, I can see them sitting on my Gene VI and Impact VI at least.

    Agree with you mate!

What an UPDATE too mate!

I want to see the loop filled already! Got to do a "filling of the loop" vid!
