Hello, currently I have a temporary fix from the AA man sorted for me at the side of the road, which means the clutch is about as high as my chin when i'm driving, and is obviously only temporary fix. I think it looks like an easy job but i've never done anything "car" before, but i'm fairly apt with my hands. I just don't really want to take it to the garage when it's a 20 quid part and they'll probably fleece me. I'm not stupid for wanting to do this myself out in the street am I? Thoughts please
No - I would imagine that it'll be fairly easy, but I've never done one on a Corsa. Get yourself a Haynes workshop manual pronto (and you may see pictures of one of my friends' hands in it) and suss out what it will involve
...unless it's like a RHD K plate Clio, which retains the same layout as the LHD Clio for the clutch cable and therefore induces all manner of rude words!
...apart from the fact that the OP has a Corsa not a Clio You'd be better off if you could get the car off the street so you won't have to worry about passing traffic running over your feet! It should be a fairly easy job, although you may want another person on hand to press clutch pedals, pass tea and so on.
It's a tool less job most of the time, just look where your current cable is, then do the exact same thing (without snapping it this time!)
Have a decent pair of pliers and mole grips handy + a friend to help out with the replacement, it's not a difficult job maybe an hours works but it fiddly and an extra pair of hands will come in handy(pun not intended). It can be done on the side of the road but you need the drivers door open to get to the clutch cable, unless you are a very small person who can kneel down in the drivers foot well.
The saga continues - so I now have the part, but it appears to be missing a part, at least I think it is. On the end of hte cable is a threaded rod, my understanding is that this screws through a sort of block that sits on the other side of the clutch lever, in order to anchor the cable and allow you to adjust the clutch. The new cable I've bought doesn't have this on the end - and, I don't have one anymore as when my clutch cable snapped I guess I lost this to the road, as I didn't have the threaded rod nor this little termination block. Just a frayed cable poking out of the outer. should that of come with the cable? I think it should have. And if it shouldn't have - what is this part called? Does anyone know? Thanks
Could it be Number 14 on this diagram? Little pricey, clicky *EDIT* Or is this the cable, with the threaded rod and adjuster? That one, that first link possibly another, and I've seen one on ebay that just has a ball end. Seems to be a bunch of different cables for this model.
Thanks! I'm sure no 14 on that diagram would work but it looks way too posh. I think this is potentially it http://www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk/acatalog/VAUXHALL_CLUTCH_PEDAL_ADJUSTER_NUT_-_90065408.html but it doesn't specifically say, but it looks exactly like the part I need.
The main struggle I had was getting my manly forearms into the tight spaces, and now I have scratched up forearms to testify! That's the first "car" thing I've done, broken my cherry.
if you dont draw blood whilst working on a car... then your not doing it correctly! That and learning the mechanics language... Basically swearing at it until it fits, whilst drawing blood...
