Because a single 980 can drive a modern AAA game with AA on a 4K display.

    Oh wait.

    It can't...

^ If you mean in aggregate terms but not in % terms on a per unit basis. Surely NV makes the most profit per unit on the 980 since it's the same GM204 chip, same 256-bit bus, same 4GB of VRAM. 980 is actually a severely overpriced part since it's hardly faster than an after-market 970 but costs more than 50% more. If you compare GTX275 vs. 280, GTX470 vs. 480, 570 vs. 580, 670 vs. 680, 770 vs. 780 and mathematically look at how much extra you have to pay for each 1% increase over the x70 part for the x80 part, the 980 is the MOST overpriced x80 GPU from NV in at least 10 years. It also happens to be a mid-range next generation Maxwell chip but after-market versions approach $600 USD. Ludicrous since you can buy almost dual 970s for the price of a single 980 and destroy the 980 at 1440P/1600P/4K gaming. We will see history repeat itself once NV and AMD launch real flagships and 980's current price will seem like a major rip-off in hindsight. The same happened with $650 280, $650 780, $1K Titan and $700 780Ti. It's the worst time to buy a GPU when only one of the GPU makers has launched a new generation. The best time to buy is when both have released their next gen parts and the biggest price wars begin.

If u are running a 4K display its not necessary to use AA as the resolution of the 4K display is much higer than normal 1080p

^ I'll take your word for it although I remember people saying that about 1080p too and AA still made a huge difference. I was disappointed at the speed of graphics cards in relation to monitor improvements but I'm feeling a bit better about it now because of the Occulus Rift. I think the release version will be 1440p which x2 is similar to 4k. But I noticed that the width is much narrower, so it should be a lot easier to handle.

I think you've misunderstood the Rift.

The Rift uses a single panel divided into two. The panel on DK2 is 1920*1080 or 960*1080 per eye. A 1440p panel will be 1280*1440 per eye.

Ahh thanks, that's perfect. 1280x1440 is a lot less than my monitor so it shouldn't be too hard for the graphics card. I just wish it was coming sooner, I wanted to play ED with it :/

That means it's a 2560x1440 screen split into two 1280x1440 screens

Which, if it's still unclear, will require more grunt to drive than a single 2560x1440 screen. ('Cos, you see, instead of rendering a single scene, you're having to render two scenes angled apart from each other. The horizontal resolution of each scene is halved, but there's still considerable overhead in having to basically render everything twice - even at half the horizontal resolution.)

Ahh damn :/ That is very high res. Well I hear AMD have a new card planned for early next year. Maybe by the time the final Rift is released there will be a single card that can handle it and keep 60fps.
