Z axis update

Right from the plate to mounting the parts on it I put the rails and the bearing blocks on and the motor mount and realized that the leadscrew nut was sitting far to high I could have added spacers on top of the the bearing blocks but not my preferred method so I machined the plate so the motor mount could sit lower.



Even though the plate was 8mm thick it wasn't enough even after taking a couple of mm off the motor mount as well.




Still no where near enough So I had to weld a plate on the back so I could machine even deeper.



That seems to have done the job after going completely through and a couple of mm in to the next piece

Anyway next was to fit the Z axis plate to the X axis bearing blocks that means drilling 17 hole's in the right places if you don't then it's not going run smoothly so a template is called for, I use clear Perspex I cut a oblong of it and place it over the area that way I can mark the holes in the correct places like below.



then clamp it in position on the piece and mark the holes out.



Really makes it easy to get it spot on

Next countersink the holes and screw it to the X axis.

 

Oh my word Teel, why you have a big...X-axis there.

lol that's my next project

with just a quick measure up it's going to be 870mm L x 870mm W x 430mm H and going to weigh in around 140kg.

I'm going to have to make the bench another 4" longer to take it the new motors that is still to get are around twice the length of the old ones so there's nothing from the original one in this one now

what are you going to do with the little one? now that you don't use any of the original pieces...

The axis rods do they come with distance per turn measurement? (like 1mm/turn)

 

This one needs stronger motors, although I said there's nothing from the original one which there isn't I'll be using the bed from the upgraded version of the original.

If you remember the original was smaller and had two pieces of MDF for the bed and the spindle was that dremmel .

 

If you're interested PM me, the site I bought the stuff from will have the information you need, if I remember right the leadscrew is a acme leadscrew 8x8.

You say little one but in it's upgraded state it's 750mm x 750mm

Edit just looked it up for you, The lead screw is 8x8 4 start moves at 8mm per revolution

Next is the Z axis plate for the spindle I picked up a 15mm thick plate of aluminium for this as I wanted to mill it flat on both side to give me a flat level plate.



Just to complicate things it needed to be as wide as the mills bed so I made it longer so I could clamp it either end.



And as luck would have it the powerfeed had packed up after only nine days ffs so it was time to improvise lol so I got an extra long 8mm nut and lathed half of it round and replaced the hand crank nut with it



and used my rechargeable drill as the motor lol




did one side with a end mill



Then other with a fly cutter then cut the piece out



Nice and flat and fits perfect



Another 22 holes and some countersinking and we have the spindle plate/mount done

Thanks for the information about the lead screws.

My very little cnc (250x200x100) currently has normal screws, I want to change that so I can use it more often. (and maybe make it bigger )

 

I'm guessing yours are 8mm threaded rod I have loads bits and bobs left over including two types of linear bearings for these ten of each so check me first if you need any bits.

Oh the one I'm building has 16x4 lead screws

Edit 250x200 is tiny what do you use that for?
