dont know if any of you have experience with HPC/Bioinformatics I'm doing a masters in bioinformatics, and whilst I'm hoping to work more lab/analysis side of things, I like playing with hardware and programming. whilst I dont need it for uni at all, I'm considering setting up a server to play with myself. hardware wise, I'd been considering this refurb although been wondering if getting a hex core 1366 and a decent amount of RAM is better (32gb would be the minimum, ideally 64GB or more) also been considering setting it up with docker, as theres been a few interesting articles on the use of docker to allow for reproducible results (rather than having to specify software versions and dependancies just hosting a docker image instead), one of the options I've seen this used for was to allow you to download docker images of whole bunch of genome assembly programs to see which one works best for the given data. I'd also be wanting to set it up with LAMP type configuration to allow me to play about with website design, and manipulating databases. however, I also need to be able to modify the cooling to keep it fairly quiet, as the floors of my flat arent really soundproof
My NAS is barely worth taking a picture of. It's just a 2 bay Zyxel box sat behind my TV in my room. Nothing special but does the job. Someday I'll build a nice home server and I'll post a picture of that.
Nice, I am going through CCNA at my university. Trying to finish CCNA3 as soon as possible so I can study CCNA4 during the summer so I can start CCNP on my own next semester. Though plans could change depending where I end up to do my internship for the summer. I would love to build myself a fully loaded lab enviroment someday. With Cisco, HP, Juniper and Palo Alto gear and few servers. Good thing that I can use my uni's lab for now so I don't go broke.
Not had a chance to get it yet, Been buys with house move stuff and some other things. Was going to try get it sorted this week though.
With the exception of people taking / have completed network qualifications. What do you all use these setups for in your own home?
my setup is really a simple one I have a lot of home movies and photos dating about 15 years, from my wedding to kids being born, birthdays etc. So backing up is vital for me. I also stream using plex server to Amazon fire tv, chromecast, tablets phones etc.
HomeServer: 12TB storage - Documents, Photo's, Films, Music, Client PC backups, Antivirus Server. Active Directory with Remote Web Access. Everything else I host off site in data centers. Game Server: Quad 2.4ghz, 8GB RAM, 160GB X2 Windows 2008 R2 Host: GamingDeluxe - Saxon House Cheltenham. Owned. Hosted Plex: Intel® Atom™ Processor C2750 (8C 2.4ghz), 32 GB DDR3 ECC , 5x 6 TB SAS2 (RAID5, 22TB Usable) Ubuntu 14.04 Host: OVH - Roubaix 4 Rented Teamspeak Server 1 VCPU, 1024MB RAM, 20GB HDD CentOS 7 Host: RackSRV - Sittingborne Rented
My Rack/NAS has grown a bit. I'm planning on cutting the cupboard in half soon and running 19" rack rail floor to ceiling one side and moving the NAS from it's current huge case into a rack mount case to neaten it all up. Current system consists of: Raspberry Pi for Spa TV Raspberry Pi for Kitchen and Deck music/streaming Nas- Core 2 Duo 3Ghz 3GB RAM 11TB of storage Running unRAID as base OS Windows 7 VM for Home Automation Software Debian LAMP VM for internal web page and MYSQL database hosting More details are on my project blog
Well... Just got a new server from work that was going to be destroyed, all I have to get is the drives. They were getting rid of a Dell 2950 2U server spec is: 2x X5355 quad core Xenon 32gb of ECC 677MHz RAM 6x 3.5" Bays DRAC5 card 2x 750W PSU Dell PERC5i Raid controller Got 6 Caddys for it on order too, just need to decide what drives to go with, tempted to start with 4x 2TB but im not sure I would love to drop a huge amount and get 6 4tb drives but thats well out of my budget. Just need to work out how I am going to have it running and what will be running in which way, as Im currently planning to use WS 2008 R2 as my OS
WHY WOULD THEY DESTROY IT??? Apologies for the caps lock there but I felt it needed. What a score for yourself. It'll probably be a little power hungry and heat a room well in winter but it's still free. My NAS feels so pathetic. It's just a 2-bay Zyxel with 2x2TB WD Greens which I store all my media on. Most is backup up onto an externel 3TB also, seeing as I have those in JBOD for 4TB. I know, it's pretty poor but anything important is backup up twice here and at work. Just to make it worse, it's being used as a monitor stand for my second monitor whilst I decide what to do with it. You can kick my from the forums now if you must. I am not worthy.
Because it is pretty much a decade old tech, and what else is there to do with such server ? Such servers usually end up being recycled, because no one wants those power hungry monsters . Also i still rock my TV cabinet/drawer server : And i did put a little J1900/4GB RAM/2TB drive/DVB-C TV card PC bellow the drawer for TV recording : Apologies for the cable mess .
