I've long since given up on trying to figure out why some things go viral, but this one has always been the most baffling to me.

 

One reason was that it came along as a flash animation, at a time when most video on the web was using RealPlayer and the like, so it was quite impressive from a technical perspective that you could have this high quality animation and a song! and watch it in the web page after only waiting a minute or two on your dial up connection.
Short version, back in them days this was the best we had

 

Because who needs CGI?

I still shake my head in disbelief whenever I see the scene from The General with the railway sleepers, simply incredible.

If they can't really be fixed by Sony, time could be spent reverse engineer them and build open hardware replacement parts, to ensure they'll never die, but hey, better waste time making funerals instead of fixing the problem...
