All I saw was White and Gold until the BBC Video which showed it as actually Black/Blue. So don't think it would work in the real world.

The US police must be poorly trained. Time after time I see videos like this and I am certain our British police could restrain/disable the person without needing to kill anyone. Or they are trained but are just trigger happy!

Either way, R.I.P to the latest victim.

It's very simple, departments across America have a history of keeping the best and brightest out of recruitment, there's almost no oversight and training mostly emphasizes domination and aggression over communication and problem solving.

On the flip side, officers themselves are shot dead at the rate of two or three per week in the US, plus family members (particularly children) seem to have a habit of getting murdered in revenge attacks, so it's not as if their violence happens in a vacuum.

So justified paranoia+low entry standards+poorly thought out training+weapons+lack of consequences=lots of violence in both directions. Exactly how to stop it is a much harder question to answer.

    On a more cheery note.

Attempted to find cartoon gif of someone shouting hot foot - which I'm 99% sure was in a WB cartoon probably involving Daffy, Google gives me a picture of someone with a lit rolled up piece of paper sticking out of their a*** crack. Bing just gives me porn.

At least on my travels I found this

But, it does bother me how they don't realize it. To me it'd be like making the funeral of someone in a type of a coma that medicine could overcome.

I thought the same thing, to be honest. Then I started extrapolating the idea to a cyberpunk story. I mean, what does happen when you upgrade your faithful household companion with home-grown hacks and black market/surplus tech?

The detective sits down wearily in the interrogation room. He throws a reproachful glance across the table at Mr. Smith, IT technician and father of two; not so much for the shredded corpse that was peeled off the landing of his suburban family abode, but for the fact that it is five in the morning and he, the detective, was hauled from the blissful warmth of his bed to deal with this cluster****.

"I assume that you can explain this", the detective says, referring to a graphic picture of said corpse in situ.

"Well, it all started with Leslie's teddy bear..."

"Leslie being your four-year old daughter?"

"Yes. She has this teddy bear that she is so very fond of. It's an old thing, a Sony with Nintendo personality expansions, but she loves it. You know how kids get..."

The detective nods sympathetically. Create a bond with the subject and all that. He has young kids too; he knows exactly how kids get.

"...It's broken down a million times, but she just won't let us throw it out. We tried to bribe her with one of the new bio-analogues, the ones with a dynamic behaviour matrix. But she wouldn't have it. I think she just finds teddy's fixed response patterns comforting... Anyway. It became increasingly difficult to get the parts. The model was discontinued ages ago. We'd go to the small repair shops, then to eBay, but the collectors charge tons for this stuff. So then I thought... well, the technology isn't really that complicated, is it? I mean, you could probably emulate the whole thing on an Arduino Quanto. And you can download the personality packs straight off the internet. So why don't I just assemble my own parts?"

The detective pauses a beat. "I must admit that I am a bit unclear how this relates to the burglar we found in a thoroughly disassembled state on your landing."

"Look, I didn't realise, OK? Teddy is programmed to look after its owner. To keep her safe. When the burglar sneaked into Leslie's bedroom that must have tripped the behavioural protection routines."

"Those routines are strictly passive", the detective points out. "These toys just warn the child to be careful crossing the road, not to stick forks in power points and stuff. They just sound an alarm if they think the child is at risk. They don't actually do anything defensive. They aren't like military or police drones."

Mr. Smith averts his eyes. An admission of guilt if the detective ever saw one. "Mr. Smith. Is there something you should tell us?"

Mr. Smith hesitates. Then it all bursts out in a tumble of words. "He shouldn't have been there! It would have been OK if he hadn't gone into her bedroom! OK, I patched some of the behaviour repertoires with code from an old Phillips lymbic module. It was the only way I could make the Nintendo packs work with the Phillips actuators that Sony used. Only later did I find out that these modules were designed for military field units, not factory robots. But I thought, it's just low-level sensory-motor coordination stuff. It isn't actually anything to do with behaviour, or personality emulation or decision matrices, so what harm can it do?"

There is a brief pause while the occupants of the interrogation room let this sink in.

"It didn't occur to you", says the detective calmly, "that combat routines are stored and triggered in motor memory for faster execution. Much like in humans, in fact. And that therefore teddy had just been upgraded with ninja hand-to-hand combat skills. So that when the burglar walked into your daughter's bedroom, instead of raising the alarm as per its original programming, it took an entirely more, well, proactive, military course of action."

"No." says Mr. Smith simply. Then he looks up. "But I'm glad he was. This man walked into my daughter's bedroom. You ask me, he had it coming to him."

Indeed, it does raise a few interesting questions. I wonder if only resorting to fully documented, Open Hardware would help or not. In any case, Aibos are not as advanced, thankfully. :D

The problem with open hardware is that it is, well, open. It can be hacked. There was this case of a bunch of hackers who'd sit in a car outside their target's house, use a laptop with WiFi or 5G to patch into whatever household robots AI toys they'd find inside, and get them to open the door for them. They'd walk right in. Sometimes they even got robo-maid to collect the valuables and bring them to the door.

Of course insurance wouldn't cover it. The items weren't actually stolen. There was no actual breaking and entering. And the robot manufacturers disavow all responsibility --if you hack your robots with unlicensed and uncertified open source hardware, you effectively void your warranty. And don't get me started on those cheap Chinese modules... they say that the Lenovo and Huwaei stuff's got Chinese secret service hacks in it. And sure, a lot of certified open source hardware now comes with encryption, but there's always a back door; the US government demands it. So the NSA can sit right at your breakfast table with you, your own kid's teddy recording everything you say to be used against you later.

Medicine is much more universal in use than spare parts though, you can cure a disease in someone from Leeds with the same medicine as you would use for the same disease in someone from Coventry.

Besides the insanely high cost of the repair itself spare parts management is an absolute nightmare.
