clicky No substance there, but it has popped up in a couple of places now. There was a fair bit of rumour a couple of months ago too.
I think this would be a wonderful thing. Intel and NVIDIA are coasting at present, much like Intel. AMD are making good cards, but having to slash prices to keep punters interested - which is doing their precarious financial position no favours. Their CPUs are much the same, they're not inherently bad, just unable to compete in terms of power. APUs are still nice though. A conglomerate the size of Samsung could be just what the doctor ordered. Or it could kill off the discrete GPU/CPU arms of AMD in favour of mobile silicon. Let's wait and see if there's anything behind these rumours.
Hmph, well, the stock prices aren't reflecting this, if someone would start to massively buy stocks it should be noticable.
They don't have to massively buy stock. Samsung could offer them a total buy out in cash. All you need is 3-4 key players and you have the company. I'd be shocked if Apple does not also make a play if this is true. ( another who could simply pay cash for AMD or nvidia for that matter)
Can't see why Apple would buy NVidia? They already make their own CPU for mobile, and Nvidia don't even have an X86 license.
I think the point is not that you'd expect the shares to be bought by Samsung. Rather that if the rumours had any substance you'd expect people in the know to be speculating on the share price rising after any acquisition announcement, which would in turn affect the current share price.
I heard a few rumours about this after the rumour samsung wanted to buy blackberry in January. People started speculating and even commented how buying AMD "made more sense". My first instinct that it's the leftover churn from that
