Marked out window location on side panel.




Cut out the hole for the window on the scroll saw.




Fairly light clean up, when marking out the scroll saw cuts with a marking knife.




Corner brackets.




Each corner has to be custom fit to the corner brackets, so I can have the window fit tightly.




The window will fill in the gaps between brackets, but the brackets aren’t straight on the inside, so it requires a bit of fettling.




I first cut off about 1/8” pieces, then file in deeper notches at the end.




Kind of annoying, but it will look better in the end.

Like those corner brackets a lot, they are going to fit the build nicely!

But, noob question maybe, why are you *chamfering*? the window, and not the wood to make it fit?

That screwdriver is a work of art itself. Build looks great.

 

Very impressive so far, should turn out to be an extremely distinctive build. And outstanding joinery skills as well!

 

@Storm - I'm guessing it's easier. If he had to sink the corners, he would have to trace the curved shape, then move the line into the corner ~1/8" to match the inset position.

That's basically accurate. if I were to sink the brackets into the side panel instead, I'd still have to do a lot of work to get the flush, and then would still have to file in a recess for the bump out on the inside of the bracket anyway. Since the Acrylic is thinner and quicker to work with files, I went that way instead

 

I totally missed the "bump" on the inside of the brackets!
This makes a whole lot of sence now...

It's not always as about skill as it is just patience. Lots of "file a little, and test fit" to sneak up on a good fit

I finished out the window… cutting 1/8” strips off where the corner brackets go




Cleaned up with a file




Then filed in the notches for the inside contour of the corner brackets




Done.




It fits alright, and the window fills in the gaps between corner braces.




You can better see in this picture how/why I had to custom fit the window






Time to turn my attention to some sort of back panel.




Ripped and crosscut using hand saws. Original plan was to make a solid rear panel, and cut our two rectangles (on either side of center) to mount some metal and make the back panel that way.




What I ended up doing, was cutting that panel into strips, and building a frame instead (less wood movement to deal with that way, as wood moves, metal doesn’t). I already have the top and bottom rails mounted in this picture.




Hand chopped mortise and tenon joints were used for building the frame




A little chamfer detail all around




Now I’ve got the outside frame done. I plan to add a piece in the center as well, just haven’t gotten that far (need to make sure I stay clear the motherboard I/O before I do that one)

haha, honestly the joinery I've been using in this project is nothing too special, but getting into the tricky joinery has always intrigued me...

I started with getting the internal frame done for mounting hardware. Had to add a piece to the front for the two stand offs.




I got all the internal frames glued up, threaded inserts installed and stand-offs mounted to those.




Hardware can now be mounted. Time to make the back panel.




Busted out the old workmate to work on the back panel.
It’s being made from aluminum.




First thing I did was to cut out the opening for the I/O shield.




From there I could mark out and cut out the openings for the GPU




Some cleanup work with some files




Things line up well.




A few more cut outs for mounting the PSU and some mesh to be glued in later.




Now gluing in the mesh.




After the back panel was cut, I could then locate the center support for the back frame.
I waited until now, to make sure it didn’t get in the way of the PSU/GPU.






Seems to work out alright.
